How much do you pay for diagnostics?

I really appreciate that, but I've already told the shop to go ahead with their tests. I guess I'll know if it was worth $215 when I get the results.

The rate is crazy given that it should not take more than 10 minutes.
However, if the shop is leasing the latest version of the Porsche system it cost them about $16,000+ a year. Very few indy's have this system. Some have the older one.

Run...don't walk...away from your now former shop. They are ripping you off big time. Some data to consider:
1. Several auto parts stores like Pep Boys or Autozone will read codes for free.
2. My indy (suburban Houston, TX) charged me $95 to read codes, recalibrate cab top open/close limits, verify none of the other codes were reflective of current problems, and clear everything out.
3. At $215 you're about 75% of the way to purchasing your own Durametric (3 VIN).
Just because someone is an independent mechanic doesn't make them automatically trustworthy. I chose mine based on multiple positive recommendations from local Porsche Club members. Even with that, my first visit consisted of simple service items; based on that I'd decide whether to use him again or not.
Good luck.

Like others have said, I would run and not look back.

Good advice -- didn't know one can get a generic scanner for $20.
My service guy has explained the cost of the diagnostic by saying that there's a diagnostic flow chart for every code in the ECU, with items to test, like voltage and resistance. He says the cost reflects the time it takes for a tech to go through all that. Sounds more involved than I first thought, but I still get the feeling that I'm paying dealer prices.

would this kind of scanner work? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-Ca...item33619fc68c this same seller also advertises a VW specific one. I'm trying to figure out which one to buy.
