Do You Need A Separate PPI If Buying From a Dealer?

Fellas -

Looking to pick my 996 C4S, and am looking at a couple of cars from authorized Porsche dealers. If buying from a Private Party or an exotic broker, I'd obviously get a Pre-Purchase Inspection, but how do you get the car checked out when buying from a dealer? Even if there was another dealer close enough, I assume you'd probably risk pissing off the first dealer by suggesting something like this. It therefore ends up being a trust game - you trust that the dealer has represented the car exactly the way it is.

Thoughts?

Don't even consider pissing dealers off. You're the customer. Do what you need to do to be comfortable dropping that much cash. If it hurts their feelings tell them to seek therapy!

I assume the car has a warranty, extended or balance of the factory warranty, so any problems would be covered. right?

I just bought my 01 996 from a dealer and had a PPI inspection done by a independant Porsche shop that came highly reconmended. I tried to fill my windshield washer fluid only to watch it run out onto the ground. Obviously not checked. trying to get them to pay for it since it was missed. Point is, make sure you have something in writing stating what they checked.

The car in question is a Basalt Black C4S that has 1,500 miles on the clock. It is not certified, but appears to be in immaculate condition based on the pictures I've seen (and I've got a pretty good eye). The dealer also has a good reputation.

Unless you think otherwise, I think a further PPI might be unwarranted.

But again, would love to hear your thoughts.

Why would a 1500 mile car not be certified? Was it wrecked. And with that few miles wouldn't it have the remainder of the factory warranty? (Assuming it's less than a year old.)

It absolutely can be, but the better question is...why would you want to? It's a 1-owner, low mileage car, with a known history and 1.5 years on the warranty clock.

As I understand it, the certification process costs $1.5K - $2.0K, so it would be an incremental cost added to the purchase price.

Just trying to play the devil's advocate here. Will also ask the dealer if he can throw that in at a price less than $1.5K.

I would negotiate with the dealer and get it certified unless you plan on keeping the car for less than the 1.5 years left on the warranty. One minor repair would pay for the warranty itself. Besides, what does a PPI cost?
