Pricepoint for '99 ??
Hello All,
Looking at a '99 C2 cabrio with hard top. 27K miles. KBB is $31K (seems high). Edmunds is $22K. Dealer asking 28K. Any sense of what it is really worth? Never negotiated with a Porsche dealer.
Thanks in advance for any advice here.

I might bump it to $26K maximum due to the low mileage. But, as stated above low mileage can work against to you. IMS failure. 5% to 10% of 996 C2/4 can experience this known issue. As a rule of thumb, if it hasn't failed by 40K mi, you can join the 5% club. For peace of mind, replace the IMS (intermediate shaft bearing) when you renew the clutch at ~60K. Good luck.

This begs the question. What color?

I'd like to know where these numbers came from as well. I'm at 38,000 miles with no issues. Should I hurry up and drive it to get it above 40,000???

I really doubt the IMS failures are 5 to 10%. There were approximately 100,000 996's manufactured. You have data that supports, 10,000 failed engines.
This whole IMS thing is real, yes but the percentage is maybe 2% and how many of those engines failed from neglect and beating the dog crap out of the car.

Have a pre-purchase inspection done. Do yourself a favor, buy a warranty. I bought a 4year 48k mile warranty from EFG Companies for $2250 last June when my car had 48k miles on it. I researched it, had their adjustor speak to the service writer at Porsche North Scottsdale to validate that they will pay for an engine if mine fails. They can use a rebuilt or remanufactured engine. The coverage cannot exceed the NADA value of the car. EFG has paid my 2 claims that were $1800+ so far. It's peace of mind if you buy the correct warranty/service contract.

Funny. Hurrying up isn't a bad idea. Research has concluded that driving her like you stole it decreases the chance of IMS failure. For the record, I am at 47K with no issue; built date 04/98; an early 996. Nonetheless, even with a chance of 95% non-failure, I plan on a IMS upgrade at 60K.
