K & N filter

Does any anyone know anything about K & N cold air intake filter?
Factory claims +25 hp, doesn't that sounds, too much?

I'm looking for something to improve my car sound mostly, probably replace my rear exhaust part (mufflers i think). Any suggestions?

I personally believe very few aftermarket equipment sellers' hp claims. A clever salesperson can grab the "right" two dyno curves and probably "prove" that washing your car with $50 soap adds 10 hp. Proving statistically significant changes via dyno takes very careful control of many variables, proper correction for those that can't be controlled, and multiple runs which cost $$. It's the rare company that does this and also discloses enough information to convince me they do it correctly.

Do a search here on K&N to see what others think about their cold air intake. While many like the soundtrack change, there are a lot of claimed very serious downsides to their system. Read what's already been posted and judge for yourself.

As for better sound on a budget--the overwhelming verdict of threads here is to get the FisterD mufflers. They cost roughly the same (or less!) as K&N CAI with none of the potential drawbacks. As a plus, FisterD rightly claim zero power gains--kudos to them!

I have a K&N on my car... Don't expect a difference in power and for me, with a turbo, there was absolutely no difference in sound. If you have a choice, get a new exhaust - you will definitely notice a change in sound with that.

I am on the waiting list for the FisterD exhaust and can't wait. Go to YouTube and check out the sound difference , they are a big improvement.

I haven't seen complaints about power reduction with K&N CAI generally. The issues mentioned most frequently are:

1. The oiled filter fouls the mass air flow meter, causing a CEL. This is by far the most common complaint. Sometimes this can be cleaned up with MAF cleaner, a 15-30 minute job. In other cases the MAF must be replaced and this is a $300+ part.

2. When first starting and driving the car with a hot engine, the "cold" air intake is a "hot" air intake since the filter isn't sealed at all in the engine compartment. The engine does lose some power and runs less well for a while until the engine compartment cools a bit.

I have both the K & N intake and the PSE hack (similar to the FisterD) and unless its my imagination, have definitely felt an increase in both torque and hp, maybe not 25hp. Had some problems at one point with the K&N, but it seems to have resolved itself. An engine is a big air pump, therefore if you improve restrictions of the inflow you must also improve restrictions to the outflow. HHMMM, hope what I just said makes sense?

some people reports great improvement in sound over 4.000 rpm with K&N

FisterD mufflers must be something like this (checkEurocup 996 C2/4 High Flow Rear Boxes)

i have a K&N and PSE.

the difference I noticed is that at >5k rpm you can HEAR when you lift.

other than that, can't say it is a marked increase in power. no decrease for sure.

So with an appropriate muffler sounds a good option. Something like this

Click on the video option right below and tell me what you think

From my experience with cotton filters, as being the only mod, I've seen 3-5whp upwards to 7-8 whp with other mods via Dyno Jet Dynometers. I had them on one of my cars, non p-car, for over 140k miles and my P-car for 60k miles.

used to have one - power increase negligible. Only change was a drop in mileage ~25 => 19.
