Anyone who has driven a boxster can acknowledge how ridiculous this comment is.

The boxster enthusiasts love their porsches for being great driving cars. The 911 tough guys say boxsters are not real porsches. The turbo tough guys say NA 911s are boring porsches. The GT tough guys say turbos do not belong in real porsches. They are all awesome, fun, wonderfully engineered cars with different purposes.

I have had a boxster, a boxster S, 2 different 996, and now a 996 turbo.

Smiles per mile of in town / tight track driving, my choice between the 996NA and 986S goes to the boxster. Especially if you dont need the space. The boxster is the better car for fun, the 911 is much more refined, larger, and better looking (in my opinion).

Anything made by Porsche IS a real Porsche...
The problem is that most car enthusiasts identify a 911 with the Porsche brand, but Porsche is a company; one which has almost always consisted of more models than the 911. Same discussion people had decades ago on whether 924/944/968s are real Porsches...

The Boxter is a good car and it handles well. And it is a Porsche. But no, it's still not a 911. Different car, different feel. Personally I prefer the 911, but you have to see for yourself what you prefer.

 

The only people who would say a Boxster is less than a Carrera are those who have never owned a Box or have a personality disorder. My Boxster will out handle my 996 any day. The Boxster will accelerate nearly as quickly and costs twenty thousand less. To me the Boxster is the ultimate roadster and the 996 is the ultimate sports car. Two Porsches that are 50% identical but very different.

 

The difference in maintanance cost says it all...

 

I have also seen an s2000 stomp a GT3. It all comes down to the driver, so I am not sure I understand your point. My 986s has posted better course times then many 911s and turbos, does that mean anything.....no.

If you want a great handling car, with the mid engine layout, get a Boxster. You will save some money!

If you want to throw children or a mother in law in the back seat, get a 911.

 

Sorry but this doesn't make sense to me. The maintenance is very comparable between the two.

 

I try to love the Boxster, I really do, but for the same reason I can't love the new GTR, I can't love the Boxster. Just my opinion here, but I find the car to be incredibly ugly, mainly the back. The Boxster Spyder looks much better, but still just too ugly for me to consider buying one.

 

911 parts are more expensive. Bigger engine, bigger brakes...

Boxter may be a fine car, i have think of buying one many times but i can't imagine my self with less than a 911. Otherwise... M - series.

 

I wouldn't say the boxster is a better car.
They are each different. If rear seats or strorage is no concern, then just go for a 996.

 

And then there are the guys who say it isn't a Porsche unless it has an air-cooled engine. In the meantime, I love my NA 996 and am envious of NOLA911 for having several, almost one for every day of the week

 

That's where many disagree. The Boxster is not lees than the 911 only different. And I'm not sure parts are more expensive for the 996 vs. the 986. Certainly labor is the same and it's generally harder to work on the mid-engine vs. rear engine.

Either way one is a four seater (theory) car vs. a roadster. There's nothing like driving a two seat, roadster, mid-engine car in the mountains. The Boxster has NEVER been prone to over or understeer or spun out in a curve......like the 911 series has done for decades. It's a personal preference and not one better than the other.

 

back seats aside, the boxster has more trunk space than a 911. The 911 only has a front trunk (boot for you euros and aussies), the boxster has one front and rear.

IMO the Boxster is not a better handling car but it is definitely an easier handling car. I have both a 986S and 997. The 986 is by far much easier to drive around the track, it is absolutely effortless compared to the 997. For city driving the 997 is much more fun, at the track I enjoy the 986. Looks...no contest the 997, but with a little work you can make a Boxster look sexy. I have put a lot of work into both my 986 and 997, and I get just as many comments on my 986 as I do my 997.

At the track I am faster than a lot of 996TTs and GT3s and I have had my *** handed to me by a $5k Miata. So what does it all mean...a big bag of nothing.

Drive what you like and what you can afford and enjoy it. If it's a Porsche then it's a Porsche and ignore the 911 elitists

996's have a lot more problems earlier in their years, if i were to get a boxster s or a 996 i would definitely get the 996, but not anything before 2002... You also need a little more driving experience to drive the 911's
