996 vs Race Car

Have found a sweet race car (something I've wanted to do all my life), but the 996 would get more use. Wish I could afford both, but can't. They are the same price. Any suggestions?

How often do you think you will be able to get out to the track? Do you already have a trailer and truck to haul this race car with? What kind of car are we talking about? CSR/DSR? Formula? Sprint?

you can buy several track cars that are legal to use them on streets too like Lotus and more. All of them are quite hard to use them for daily drive.
Unless you have a race track close to you, don't bother...

What kind of racecar?

I say get the racecar, as long as you can afford it and the related costs.

A racecar would only make sense if you are considering participating in some amateur race series. As mentioned above, there are other things to consider with a racecar such as trailor & truck etc...
If you are just going on the track to have fun and want something close to a racecar and don't mind brick hard suspension on the street and no interior, I'd say get a 996 GT3, strip it, put on a race suspension (such as Moton), race seats, cage, and any other performance mods you desire. You would have something similar to a race car that's street legal and would probably cost less to buy & maintain.

I do have the tow vehicle, but would need the trailer for the car (the seller may let me buy the one he has with the car now?). I live near Mid-Ohio, my father lives near Summit Point and a terrific friend lives near VIR and knows the original owners. I guess I need to find out how much all the safety gear costs - shoes, suit, gloves, helmet, hans, etc. The car is race ready (except I may repaint it, don't care for neon green). It has won all but three of its races. I guess it still boils down to the age old question - mind or heart.

What type of race car is this? Maintenance costs can vary greatly between different types. For example in open wheel racing that I participated in growing up, a little trip into the runoff could easily mean a broken upright or front wing. A street car converted to race probably wouldn't have any damage from it.

How much do you enjoy racing? Do you want to go to the track once a month? If you do I would say go for the track car it is a lot of fun but you also have to think about the cost of new tires, brakes, and the other consumables when you are tracking a car.

Sorry for the delay, I can only use my computer when my son is sleeping

Does 6Speed have a racing forum? I did not see one - would like to ask some of the questions that you have brought up.

The race car is for sale on nasa forums. I really enjoy that site also.

How much do I love racing? It is hard to put into words, but I will try. When I'm racing, I feel like I am truly alive. I feel like I have finally come home - like this is what I was born to do. But, I know that it can be a time consuming hobby and a selfish one. So, that is where I am torn.

Once again, what kind of car is it? There are race cars that are good for beginners and ones that are TERRIBLE for beginners. If you say what the car is, we might be able to save you from making a potential mistake.

Based on the geographic range of the tracks you listed you are going to want a trailer regardless of it being street legal or not. You will need extra wheels jacks fuel bottles, tools ect... Secondly if anything happens to the car while you are hundreds of miles from home you want to be able to tow it home.
