how to tow a 996

I will be picking up a new to me 2001 996 near Atlanta and towing it back to Nashville shortly. Plan on getting a UHaul auto trailer and tow it behind my Honda Ridgeline - just like my old 912E was brought home.

When reading the towing info on the UHaul web site is says to load the car with the motor towards the front for best weight distribution - but the 996 has the aero kit - can it be towed backwards - or does it not matter which way it is on the trailer because the car is short and most of the weight will be over the 2 axles?

What is the best way to handle this?

All ideas appreciated.

it'll be easier if you rent the auto transport instead of the tow dolly...may cost a little more though..just my .2...G/L

I will be using a trailer, not a dolly. Question is forwards or backwards on the trailer for most stability during the tow.

I would load it front first. If you have too much weight on the rear it will start to steer the truck, too much on the hitch the rig will start to porpoise. Either way you will probably have enough room to move the car back or front to even the load and smooth out the ride. Worst case stop and turn the car around. The Ridgeline and the trailer/car combo are pretty close to even weight if they start dukeing it out... stop and adjust if necessary. Or you may have a replay of the "Thrilla in Mani..uh Nashville."

The towing went well. I have attached a pic of the 2001 996 and of my old 1976 912E which is no longer with us - fuel leak and burned to the ground a few years ago. The Honda Ridgeline is a great tow vehicle - especially in sub 40 degree weather with rain and snow on the drive from Atlanta area to Nashville area.

Uhaul web site had great info on how to load a low vehicle - 2x10 were very handy to elevate ramps and raise front wheels so there was no interference.
