Need new transmission...
Took my '99 911 C2 in for 60K service and to address a gearbox whine. Just got the call with diagnosis on the whine.... needs a new transmission.
The dealer has quoted -
$7K for a rebuild
$10K for a new transmission
Bought it 4 months ago for $23K, clean history/records and I knew the previous owner.
What would you do? Are these prices high? Anyone know any indy shops in Nashville, TN?
Thanks in advance,
Casey

Manual trannies don't go bad that often so I would personally chance it on a used one with warranty. There are close to dozen 99 manual 2wd lsd equipped trannies in salvage yards now ranging between $3-4k. Figure about $1k for labor. While you have it off, might as well do the clutch, rms, and ims update.

Salvage yards can be risky... you don't know the history of that transmission and if comes from a "smack up" car... there are definitely issues with trannies on 996... lots of em... from pinion bearings to synchros etc...
best spend the $$ on a proper re-build from a reputable shop... GBOX can re-build it for you for about $4K and they do good work.
Buying somebody else's used part and having to do it again will really hurt... do it right the first time.

My local Porsche dealer quoted me $3,500 for a complete rebuild. I think my local indy would do it for less than that.

Just installed a brand new one from Porsche on my 99 c2. 8k including taxes, install, through my Indy. Interestingly, the first one that they installed did NOT work properly, so they order another one and the next day it arrived and this time it worked just fine.

What do you mean by brand new? Porsche refurbished?
