Possible bad catalytic converter, what is warranty on these?

I have a 2004 C2 996 with 58,000 miles. I think I have a bad catalytic converter. What is the emission warranty for my 996 and is it covered under warranty?

The passenger side cat is making a random rattling noise at idle and I have a CEL with a P0430 code. It also smells like it is running rich.

I read in another forum: federal warranty is 8 years and/or 80K miles. Supposedly, Porsche NA applies this ONLY to stock (unmolested/unmodified) exhaust systems.

Just got my cats replaced on my 2004 40th AE $49k miles today.
Federal EPA laws REQUIRE manufacturers to warranty emissions for 8years or 89k miles from vehicles original in service date. So may take a trip to the dealer and a call or two to PCNA but you should be covered.

P.S. I have FisterD modded mufflers so "untouched" OEM exhaust is NOT a requirement.

Good luck

I had the same problem on my 04 4S (both cats went bad) and the dealership replaced them. I was also told that the 8 year/80k is the warranty stipulation. I didn't have to spend a penny.
Good luck. You shouldn't have any issues getting it replaced on their dime.

Thanks for the replies. Any chance the stealership can weasel out with something like "you waited too long to replace your O2 sensor" or some other maintenance?

You never know with these dealers but if they do give you a problem just go somewhere else. Like everyone said, it's the law and they have to take care of it.

Envious! I have the same issue, but mine's an 02 with 70K on the ticker. Missed it by a couple years.

Called the local dealer in Nashville. Even though they confirmed that the emission warranty is 80/80k, they cited the factory VIN record saying it expired in June 2011.

Called PCNA, and they confirmed that the emission warranty is 8/80k, so I'm covered. Guess I'll have to teach some 'rithmatic to the dealer service personnel.

I'm guessing that when the car was new, the emission warranty was 7/70k and it was later increased to 8/80k, but nobody bothered to update the VIN record.

Nope. As per EPA.gov ALL cars sold in US after 1995 have an 8 year 80k mile warranty.

Catalytic converter - are they consumable?

I have an '04 C4S - I'm getting a rattle and the local mechanic says its the passenger side cat. I looked at the carfax from when i purchased, and it looks like the cats were replaced before in 2012. Q - should these things be wearing out so much? Is it the track that's doing these things in, I've had the car 2 years and its 90% track 10% street.

Could be the track use, but I would certainly check all the cat and muffler mounts, one of mine did crack and it made a rattle, the fix was a little welding.
