backup lights not working

all of a sudden my back up lights have stopped working. They didn't work at all for a week or so - then yesterday worked once!

i checked fuses and bulbs -- all ok - i'm guessing its the actual switch - is it in the transmission or near the shifter?

thanks!

If yours is a manual, it's probably the reverse switch on top of the transmission. Passenger side for US cars just on top of the rear of the transmission (towards front of car).

Easy to remove and replace, plenty of write ups available.

i just had this issue and my reverse switch replaced by my indy as part of a service. if it's the same thing as yours, he put in a new reverse switch: part no. 996 606 103 01 - part was $19.95, labor $33.75. i guess for $33.75 it couldn't have been a very difficult job!

It's literally the easiest thing you can fix on a 996. I think it took me 5 minutes.
