Oil leak clarification...

Hey all,

Just wanted to get an idea of what part would need replacing to fix the oil leak below. The hose clamp has been replaced at some and it is tight, is this a breather line for the crankcase? It is located on the back left of the engine if you were looking at the engine compartment from the rear, front right part of the engine looking at it from underneath the car. It is lined into the bottom intake manifold from the cylinder head. Any suggestions would be helpful.

That is the aos, air oil separator. The corrugated tube is the aos bellows.

I've heard that you should replace the AOS while doing the clutch, RMS and IMS retrofit. Is this due to shared labor? Or just easier access. I have a 2001 996. Thanks.

So is just the bellow that is leaking or the AOS that is leaking/failed? I'm just not sure what the symptoms are when an AOS fails. No driveability issues or oil consumption.

Edit: Upon further research, it seems the boot/bellow can be purchased separately and sometimes leaks. An easy solution if you're lucky. If not, the dreaded AOS repair is likely.

And to the other persons question, it certainly sounds like if the tranny is pulled this job is WAY easier as opposed to it still in the car. It's possible to do with everything intact but not simple. The part is cheap enough that if you are doing all that work, might as well do this while you're at it.

Just wanted to follow up... The aftermarket clamp you see in the picture (on the bottom portion of the bellows) was broken/stripped. So oil has been spewing out the bottom of it. Bought the bellows, new clamps and all is well in my world. Yay.
