The oil is on order and should be here tomorrow. Spoke to my local Porsche dealership and they also agreed that 0w40 Mobil 1 is the best oil and should help with the tapping............

No. IMS issues, when they rarely occur, don't cause valve tick.

Ask about the hydraulic lifters at your dealership. I just had the EXACT issue last month w the oil change to Mobil 0/40. My ticking quits after about 10 seconds though. I was told (and i confirmed it) that it's nothing to worry about. I only have 29k miles on mine.

Just drove 180 miles to London and it is still ticking. It was ok when i started it from cole before the drive.

I'm going to take it to my local dealership for a quick look. If they confirm its a lifter i will get it done an a local independant.

I went to the porsche dealership today and they were not the most helpful.
They say it is piston slap and the engine is dead. I think they were trying to fob
Me off so its going into an independant porsche specialist tomorrow morning

What are the symptons of piston slap? I thought it was only obvious when the engine was cold at start up? Mine only makes a noise when its hot

Sounds fishy to me. My experience with dealers has been poor. When I had the PPI done prior to the purchase of my car, they (dealer) missed everything that was wrong with the car and told me that the car needed a $3000 repair that turned out to be erroneous. That helped me negotiate a lower price however. Last year when 300 miles from home my Mercedes needed a fix. While at an the independent shop, I noticed a 996 there. The tech told me that the local Porsche dealer could not figure out what was wrong with it and brought the car to them with the top half of the motor apart and delivered the parts in a box. They had it fixed.

If it is a lifter, it's probably #6

not good, went to 2 independants today and the engine is knackered.

Scored cylinder on 6. It requires a rebuild and i'm not happy about it.

also requires a new liner and piston.

Tempted to rebuild it myself apart from the re-sleeve as i have done a few engines in the past.

Does anyone know what special tools are required for the rebuild and if an assembly rebuild manual is available?

If you are gonna DIY, then I would see if local PCA member will loan you the tools or buy a generic one off eBay. It will probably set you back a few hundred for the complete version.
