Need a new key. Will a 997 key work?

I need a new key - lost one. I remember seeing a thread that stated that 997 keys can be used on 996 cars. Can this be confirmed?

The uncertainty I have is that the 997 key doesn't come with a code tag.

you'll have to go to the dealer for that then iirc

the 997 cases can be swapped easily with the 996 cases and look ten times nicer imo, but you need the chip from your 996 key for it to work

So I think the answer is no. I'm aware that the 996 guts can placed into the 997 casing. I was hoping that the entire 997 setup could be used in 996, this would spare me a $100+. But apparently, I'm SOL.
