clutch hydraulic question

ok i am about to blow a gasket about my clutch ,
need some point cleared up , pedal feel very bad or may be i am just not used to it ( other car B5 S4)
--does the clutch pedal come back all the way against the stop or does it float just below
here is what i did , please feel free to confirm
--when the pedal is to the floor the slave is locked
--when the pedal is at the stop ( in my case held by a strap) the slave is free floating meaning you can push it by hand
--the second the pedal move off the stop the slave locks up

the clutch is new , as well as the slave , and i have been bleeding it with about 1 gallon of DOT 4 with a pressure bleeder , so i think there is no more air,

i know there is only the master left to change but before i do that , i would like to have the confirmation

thanks in advance

the flex hose near the slave , how much movement is too much

When you release the clutch the pedel should come all the way out or back and fairly quickly. It should not "float" back or be anything other that all the way out.
