Tail won't automatically deploy

1999 996 - I can deploy the tail with the switch manually but it don't deploy automatically. Can someone provide some direction as to what the fix might be?

I would think it's the speed sensor. Take her up tp 75mph to test, that's the speed at which it should deploy.

I honestly don't know where the sensor is, but since you can deploy it with the switch it would make sense all connections are working.
If I had to guess I would think the sensor is part of the software releated to the speedo. Just a guess though.

Wow exactly the type of helpful advice people come to the internet for. +16 internets for you sir.

On a relevant note, I don't know where the speed sensor is actually located, and did not find an answer searching this site, but there was one article on Renntech that suggested looking for the electrical connector on the rear right of the engine bay near the light housing. Disconnect it, clean it and reconnect it and see if that helps.

Hopefully someone with additional information will chime in on this post shortly, but if not renntech.org is another great resource for technical information. They require you to create an account, and the members are sticklers for pictures and an introduction before your first post, but a lot of good info on their forums. A good portion of the site is free, but there are areas that are only accessible to paid members.

If it doesn't deploy properly, take it by your dealership and have them evaluate it. If the fuse is working properly it should be an easy diagnosis. I don't have one or I would go look at it and see. Do an internet search on 1999 996 spoiler speed sensor and see what pops up.

Just a troubleshooting question... If you raise it manually, does it come down automatically?

I had that problem a couple of times in high school. I had to. Sorry.

As a previous poster suggested, I'll take a look at the electrical connection and clean it up.
Tail does automatically retract when I use manual switch to raise - this is why I'm kinda stumped.

I would think if the problem was the speed sensor, the tail would not retract when you slow down. I'm leaning toward a micro-switch issue. I thought you would get a CEL if there was a micro-switch problem though.

How would this effect the engine to get a CEL (check engine light)?

The car does monitor the status of the wing operation and if it detects anything wrong it will display a CEL and return a code. It has never happened to me, but it is common on this site for people who have had hydraulic or micro-switch failures. Since he is not getting a CEL, I wouldn't know where to start for such a weird failure.
