Convertible top control

My carrera top can only be controlled with the parking brake applied and at a full stop, what a hassle. Is there anyway to bypass it and control it while i'm rolling as the TT cabs can.

There was a device on ebay, but I would like your suggestions.

Thanks, Mark

Try a search on rennlist.com there's a hack to perform the operation at a slow roll and a special one touch aftermarket control switch.

i did this to my car last week.. LOVE IT... especially in traffic. All you do is cut one of the wires that checks speed. Since you're asking.. i'm assuming you have a pre '02 model... mine is a '99 and i cut the pink/grey wire going to the control unit (behind the driver's side roll bar, under the all the covering)

Sharkworks also sells a one touch button feature for the top. Instead of holding the button down, you just tap it once.

The module for the speed sensor is made by Techart and has a speed limit of 35 or 45 mph. Gert @ www.carnewal.com usually has them at a good price. I believe list is somewhere around $650-750. The wire cutting route is ok but kind of erratic. After modding mine, I ended up with a top that would not work at all sometimes. If you clip the wire, it eliminates the speed sensor but you still have to raise the e-brake lever 1 click to tell the car that the brake is engaged. This is the one safety feature that you don't want to disable in case you or your passenger accidently hits the top operation button. When you clip the wire, there is no speed limit so you could technically open your top @ whatever speed you are traveling. If you want a quick and easy way to do it, the Techart is the way to go.

Clip the wire - its free. I did it and have no issues. You would have to be a dumb**** to even think of raising or lowering the top at more than 35 mph - I usually do mine below 10 and then start accelerating when the top is almost down or up. Really cool. The one touch button from Sharkworks sounds nice but my remote alarm puts the top up or down before I even get near the car. - Even better!!!

Clipped the wire about a year ago and have not had any problems. Works like a charm and like the others said, its FREE.

Yes it's free but I did have problems with mine. I clipped the wire and safely terminated the ends but I had an intermittent problem where the top would not operate. Might have had something to do with the ebrake lever but not sure. Doesn't do it anymore.

Speaking of mods... did you guys know that you could raise your rear windows even with the top down?

Mine is a 2002 cab. I would prefer not to cut any wires, the thought of it just freaks me out already. I'll keep searching for a device even if it will cost me. I actually saw a device on ebay called SMARTTOP for $279. The installation seems quite easy, but has anyone tried it? Thanks for your feedback.

Yes, just press the lever where the cab top locks in and raise the rear windows as normal.

Give me $200 and I'll cut the wires for you.

I just did it... I cut the pink/grey wire and it works great. This will come in handy for stall & crawl Boston traffic this summer.
