996 needs a clutch job - quoted 4800!

Need help - have a yellow 1999 911C - selling it privately - so, I want to make sure everything works - Went for a check-up & guess what...needs a clutch job (evidently) yes, there is a slight delay in acceleration - revs, then catches - loss of power etc... At any rate, the local Porsche indy place quoted me 4800 - clutch job, flywheel & bearing (the chap just took it for a ride around the block) - I'm sure he is an expert, just thought that sounded way too-high? Everything else on the car is mint - 57K miles - Question: Can someone recco an indy shop in MA that would be LESS than 4800.00? OR, are there other things I should/can rule out??

Huge Thanks.

That is crazy, should be close to half that price. Do you really need to change the flywheel at that mileage? OEM parts or aftermarket?

Yes that is a bit high. Sometimes people think we crap cash since we own a porsche. I would recommend shopping on line and getting all the parts you need including washers or seals if needed. Spend the time find great and light parts for the fly wheel I would recommend after market its lighter, competition clutch it will last longer. Then find out how much he charges an hour. Call the shop as an anonymous person and ask for an hourly rate from them. Once you get the prices for the clutch parts and his hourly rate you should have a great ball park of how much your about to spend. Try to pay cash and get him to go lower on the hourly rate. The shop I go to charges $136 an hour. The dealer charges $180. I think for a clutch job from a professional shop is 4-6 hours. (Don't quote me on this, I could be wrong cause I think they have to drop the engine)

This is the direction I would take. Good luck.

Unless you've been driving around with a worn clutch, you may not need the flywheel done. Certainly check around, including a Porsche dealer, and get a price closer to $2,000-$2,500.

Wow??

Way over priced! Get a Spec Clutch, and get the class 2, the OEM is more expensive and won't last as long. A reasonable price is about $1800.00 - $2000.00 , $1000 for the clutch and 8 hours of labor @ $100/Hr.

Just as a price point, I had the clutch, RMS and an upgraded IMS bearing done in San Jose Ca for $2100 in April of this year on my 99 996 C2.

Great advice & recco's thanks a bunch - wow is right...looks like I'll shop this around then. Still a novice for sure - but at least now I'll sound a tad more intelligent about what it could need, etc...Huge thanks Gents. BTW - obviously, I should not drive the car that much till I get her fixed? (Seemed to happen fast & I've had plenty of standard cars before).. Perhaps with the new clutch - the car should drive almost like new again. I will call a couple of Boston Porsche dealers as well... 2500 I can do - 4800 is painful. THX!

Yes, BornRich, let us know what shop in SJ you took it to. I use RealMean Garage in Sunnyvale and I like them a lot. I like their communications style and they seem to be thorough and ethical. But I did end up paying almost $5K for a clutch, pressure plate and flywheel. This was on a 38K car, but my buddy was doing some harsh clutch work with it (with me in it) and so I think he took it over the edge.

FYI, it's a ttx50, so that's got 450 hp, and can cause a lot of damage in a hurry. Which I found out. :-o

Curious as to the shop you used in San Jose.

WOW!!! Some of the prices are out there, I paid I think $3500 for a clutch and IMS bearing fix out the door and this was at the Porsche Dealer. My flywheel was fine and my clutch was pretty toasted. My price was was parts, tax and labor. Just to throw that out there.

Flintworks did the work on my car. I went back and looked at my records and the cost before tax was $2200. No replacement of the flywheel. I have been to Real Mean Garage and know the owner Bob Grigsby well. He is more expensive but is a great shop. He rebuilt the trans in my sc a couple offers ago. For that kind of work I wouldn't trust anyone else.

last yr got my stock clutch kit from Sunset Porsche for $500 on my 02 996-
was doing RMS seal under extended warranty so had new clutch installed- Your selling car for reasonable price so it's questionable if you should spend the xtra few $ to remove flywheel to install new RMS and upgraded bearing-
if you were keeping the car it's a no brainer to do this and also replace the AOS while trans out.
