cost of owning a 99-00 carrera
hello gents,
I'm seriously looking at getting a 99-00 c2 or c4 and was wondering what the basic costs are going to be like once I get the car. I know it's not a honda civic, but around how much will/should I be spending? I'm coming from a 95 m3 which has been very good to me as long as all the maintenance is done/car is up to spec.
I'm also looking for a car with the aero kit. It seems that prices don't reflect this kit at all when browsing the classifieds. If i don't find one with the aero kit, how much would getting the aero kit be (parts only)?

I've had my 99 for a year now (almost) and except for tires and mods, no issues. All the service records as well show very little in the way of costs outside normal maint. I love it. The aero kit can be $$ if you get it from Porsche for sure....

i got the 2 year 100K warranty from Porsche when i bought mine. Make sure its checked out from Porsche (if you not buying it from them) and get a PPI done. The 6 year warranty should be out or almost by now. Look at everything you can to check it out before you buy. The servicing is usually like 1K for the 30K mile but after that i am not sure, mine is only got 23K so havent hit it yet.

You should be more concerned with how much you will be spending on mods as they are more addicting / costly than repairs... For a list of my 99' ad-ons check out "My Garage" below.

Don't foget to factor in your gas.. I know I have the M3 and this 996 and I can get a lot more miles out of the inline 6..... Maint is going to cost a bit more and so will parts along with labor but hey, you're stepping it up a bit.
As for the Aero kits depeding on OEM or after market you can expect to spend 3-5K on a complete kit.

a few of teh guys here have high mileage 996 and they seem to be working out pretty well..
correct me if i am wrong..it seems to me taht you willbe coming fromt he honda/acura camp? im basing this from your sn.. comtech gsr..
fromw hat i gather from your sn u have an 94 up integra gsr w/ comptech parts. ns tuff right (dunno if comtech made an s/c for it..)
one thing that i will warn u is how utterly expensive parts for the pcar is.. mods in particular.. from the honda camp aftermarket pedals cost 25-100.00 at the most.. while a pcar is 300. to 500.00 for a set and if u get one for 300.00 that is already a steal...
coilovers are sub1k for honda/acura while the pcar ones start at 2k at the least...
plus labor.. labor for a coilover install is around 500.00 at least and up depending on the shop and if it comes with alignment n stuff....
i am not discouraging you in any way... im just want you to come in with an open mind and knowingly have an idea of how much cmodding costs in the p-car
decide if you are going the p-car route.. and if you do oi welcome you to out group

As everyone has been saying parts costs are much higher that you'd expect, something that would cost $25 for a honda may cost $250 for a porsche. As for wear items, you will find all modern porsche's eat tires and clutch(unless you are really good). Also the 996 has drilled rotors that should not be refinished and also wear the brakes down quicker than most cars.
FYI: Tires 800-1000 minimum if you buy whatever tire rack has on sale plus mounting.

I have a 99...and I had a motor go bad within 6 months of my ownership. Luckily it was a certified car from a Porsche dealer and it came with a 100k mile warranty. Have a new engine and it didnt cost me a cent. I would say do NOT buy a 996 without a warranty of some kind. Usually nothing goes wrong, but when they do it usually a major repair, or an engine failure. Now I LOVE my 996 and just did a BUNCH of mods, its the best car I have owned and besides that engine, the car has been rock solid.

The 996 is not expensive to maintain. Rear tires every 10,000 - 12,000 miles for $600 -$800. Change the oil yourself for $70 and 30 minutes. Clutch life is the same as any other performance car. Less life if you beat the hell out of it and more life if you drive it propely. New clutch kit is the same cost as replacement for a honda...about $1500. Stock brakes on a 6 speed should last more than 40,000 miles on a car driven propely and hard. Easy, do it yourself change. Change the plugs in 1 hour for $50 every 30,000 miles or so. Air filter is an easy, cheap replacement.
Other than the rear tires, there is no more maintenance cost for a 996 than any other high end car.

comptech gsr is definitely from the integra gs-r, my track/strip/daily driver during highschool. It was/is definitely cheaper to maintain, but I was also only working during the summer---parents were very kind enough to pay for the car.
I got the m3 as a daily driver (to take me back and forth from the bay area to boston), but it never saw its duty cross country =).
As of May, I graduated BC and am now working in Menlo Park (grew up in atherton, lived/live in MP since h.s.) AND can well afford a newer toy =))).
I was looking at getting a competition m3 but am going to hold on and save a bit until I am fully moved into my new place. Plus, the M3 will be dated in a few years.
The only experience with porsche has been with my dad's 964 c4, which ate up tires big time.
Definitely wanna bring a p-car back to the garage.

I had a 95 M3. Daytona Violet. The M3 comp is E46 right?
The 996 and E36 M3 are night and day. The M5 is closer on the street but no on the track.
Cost of owner ship. Well, staying w/ factory parts will cost an arm and a leg.
My cousin just got the front brakes done for a little more than $300 rotor and pads. He has had it for a year with no issues w/ high miles. Yearly maint will be about $100 or so. You'll love it.

$100 bucks for yearly is understatement...
stay away from mods and you will be fine.
