996 Clutch Repair Cost

I'm having my manual transmission rebuilt. While I'm at it I thought it'd be good idea to replace the clutch. I have 42k miles on the car, I bought it used 3 yrs ago with 37k miles and I assume it still has the original clutch. Can anyone tell me how much approximately it will cost to replace a clutch in the So Cali area?

I would think about $1000 or $1250 if you replace the flywheel. I would assume your doing this for preventitive reasons so there should be no damage to the cluch now, I would use a Spec Clutch and go with a stage 2.

FLATT, thanks for the feedback. I took my car to Callas Rennsport in Torrance yesterday and I'm still awaiting for an estimate. Yes, I'm doing the clutch for preventative reason. I don't track my car and drive it on weekends only. Would it still be worth going with Spec Stage 2?

I believe the class 2 (not 2+) clutch will last a little longer, basically it's designed for a bit more horsepower and since it's really not that much more $$ I would. Talk to your brake guy and see what his opinion is.

Since they are removing the transmission, 95% of the hard work is already done. OEM clutch set is about $450. OEM Flywheel, which you should not need with 42K miles (unless abused) is around $800.

Makes sense. My concern is if it's going to make the clutch much stiffer if I go to the Spec Stage 2.

FYI the Spec stageII clutch in my STi didn't hold as much power (or last as long) as an Exedy OE replacement clutch. I don't know how the rest of their clutches are, but that turned me off.

You could also look at sachs clutches. Exedy does make a nice OEM Spec clutch. Choosing one and or what class is largely dependent on how you drive and what mods you may do to the engine in the future, increase HP and torque you will need a higher stage, if you plan on doing nothing go OEM. Lead foot/sport street stage 2 IMO, normal OEM. Track/DE go stage 2+ or three.

You may not need the flywheel since you're not experiencing any problems and you're doing it on a preventative nature. Also, the labor should be lower because you're already there with the other work your having done. This is something you should be able to negotiate.

FYI Exedy Clutch kit $571.11 on Amazon. I priced an 02-03 911 C2

Oh, while you're there I'd have them do the RMS.

This is what I did when I bought mine, new LNE IMS bearing, new RMS, complete fluid change (oil, brakes,coolant), high flow air filter, and new battery.

Make sure you get the INS Solution! Call Jake and find out who can install this, because no when can unless they have been trained by Flat 6 or LNT,it' not a direct replacement.! This is the perfect solution, period, or contact LNE

Oh, I'm sure you're in excellent hands, all I was trying to say was don't go through the exercise of replacing the bearing with a bearing, get the IMS Solution, no moving parts problem solved. It's only been on the market since January and was developed between LNE and Flat 6 Innovations, I wish it hed been available when I die mine, I used the LNE IMS retrofit ceramic bearing.
