About to do first oil change - which oil?

what is the low thermostat ??
are there different for the 996 ?

Hi
The thermostat opens for the hot water from the engine, to the radiators a bit earlier, so the engine don't get so hot.
And the third radiator in the center helps to cool it down...ofcourse
(Third radiator is standard on tiptronic)

I use DT40, developed by Flat6 Innovations, LN Engineering, and Joe Gibbs Racing for the Porsche.
Total, M1, Castrol, Liqui Molly, Motul, and Royal Purple are all good oils. You need 0w-40 or 5w-40 European Full Synthetic.
PM me an e-mail address and I'll send you a list of Porsche Approved oils.

I was told to use Mobil 1 0W40 but it seems like if you drive the car in hot weather the oil thins up too much and the oil pressure drops when the oil reaches 200F+. I might try Mobil 1 5W40 in my next oil change or maybe Rotella T6.

Hi GWerks,
Many run Mobil 0-40 with no issues. However, I think there are much better options out there. You are exactly right, I think Mobil sheers too quickly, and when thin starts to burn off more than others. Check into the Mobil 5w-50 for a better alternative. You can find it online and also Amazon. I would definitely look at the Joe Gibbs DT40. It has the high zinc / ZDDP that the others used to have and quit using. Amsoil European is also a better choice in the 5w-40 and you can get it online too. I hear Rotella is amazing and has great UOA results. It has the high ZDDP that you need and is made for high heat applications. You'll get a hundred different opinions, so do some research and be happy with your choice. It looks like if you stick with any of the above you'll be doing well!

here is a current list I believe of the A40 spec oils:
http://www.pedrosgarage.com/Site_3/Porsche-Approved_Oils.html
Mobil 1 is still approved, it's listed under Exxon (ExxonMobil)
Hope this helps. When I locate a pdf on it I'll let you guys know.

I just spoke with an engine oil specialist at Mobil, and he said Mobil 1 5W40 was no longer an approved oil for my car (2001, non-turbo 911). I have a list called Manufacturer Approval No. 27/08 from 2008, so this must have been superceded. Could you post a PDF of the more recent list?

Thanks for the reply! I wish I would of heard someone confident like you talk to me when I was about to do my first oil change on my 911. I have built a few B5 S4's and turbo M3's and have tried many different oils, and Rotella T6 seems to be the kind that holds up the best, under any conditions, even on cars with break in tunes that run pig rich @ WOT so I might try it next, I change my oil every 2-3k miles so I know it can't hurt it, I drive the car like a grandma anyway.
An other thing, I have seen lab results on the T6 after 3k miles on a modified B5 S4 (2.7TT) and it was like brand new when the Mobil 1 0W40 showed signs of wear (can't remember exactly what they found in it), both kinds of oil were used in the same engine and under very similar driving conditions.

In regards to the Rotella, it's an oil designed for diesel motors. Based on some research it looks like a popular oil however for gasoline motors as well.
Has any one run this oil for lots and lots of miles? I'm curious to see if the high ZDDP content really has an effect on the catalytic converters.
I should try this oil on my audi 1.8t next. See how that goes. Unfortunately, I just changed the oil with Pennzoil Ultra.
Been searching for an oil for my 996. I want something that doesn't sheer quickly, so I've pretty much eliminated the M1 0w-40.

The DT40 was designed for street use and does not affect the cats. In the past manufactures were really loading up on the ZDDP for it benefits, but not any more.
You are going to see more oils with high ZDDP in them but they are going to marketed for high milage cars which it will help.

I'm confused. I just picked my car up on Friday and the owner's manual recommends synthetic 10W40 or 5W30 (depending on ambient temps). Yet here everyone is saying 0W40 or 5W40? I am about to do my first oil change and would like to get the right stuff considering these cars use a lot of oil.

Sorry, I should have clarified. My car is a 2003 C4S.
