Took my car in for the 15K mile service. Talked to the service advisor today. He's going down the list of repairs made. He's like, blah, blah, RMS, blah, blah... I immediatley panicked.

He said they noticed some oil pooling around the rear main seal. I never had a drop in my garage. He said it was just barely dripping out and pooling, so they replaced it.

I asked if the machining was off around the seal. He said that they measured it, and it was not. He did say they replaced the seal. I asked if it was a new design in the seal. He said he didn't think so. I asked what was to stop this from happening again? He didn't really have an answer.

Now dont get me wrong, the service guy was very cool. I'm just a little concerned that this is going to be an ongoing problem with this car for as long as I own it. Uggghhh.

I wish Porsche would give us a free pass of lifetime repairs on this problem, since it's obviously a serious design flaw.

So who else is with me in the RMS club, what was your mileage, and did it ever happen again? I'd love to gather up a list and send it to Porsche NA. I know Rennlist has an active thread going over there.
I couldn't have said it better myself. If a new clutch and a $20 dollar seal is what it will take for me to enjoy my 996's, sign me up.

I think we should all move off this issue. On that note, I just had to do my 00 C2 with 29K miles or whatever on it and my 99 C4 with 58k Miles is dry. Comes with ownership.

No complaints here.

Deputy,

My car had the RMS changed at 4500 miles, not because it was leaking, but I had a defective transmission. I had a burl on a synchro that made you have to rev match 2nd a bit too much. Not common but porsche replaced it. While the dealer was in there he said they might as well check the machining and change the RMS (it was all apart anyway) and put in the new self-sealing bolts since my car was an 03. The dealer ate the cost of the RMS and the bolts since they were not leaking(so they could not claim a warranty repair to porsche).

Corey
I have the same done at 4k. My second gear was making weird noise. No RMS leak but they changed it anyway. Fun factor out weighs any RMS problem. Buy a good extended warranty to cover this or any other major repair. It'll be worth it. You could even use the warranty partially to change your clutch.

what the f.... if you didn't notice any oil leaks from the outside then how could the service guy know if the was an rms leak? "pooling around the rms" ?out of curiosity, go back to your service rep and ask how they accessed the rms. only way is to drop the tranny. unless there was some oil residual on the tranny underside then it was absolute bull**** and he was just drumming up some business for his service department. it wouldn't surprise me if there was no rms problem at all. if its under warranty then PCNA pays for the bill. the dealer... what do they care, they are gettin paid!

if it indeed turns out to be an ongoing occurrence then every time it is "fixed" then they extend the warranty on parts and labour for another 18~24 months (from memory). you might want to check with your dealer or PCNA.

PCNA already knows how many rms's have been fixed. they pay for the repair. more imortantly i want PCNA to disclose how many rms have been "fixed"

I am on my forth, (22,500 miles) and i am pretty sure this time they will change the motor. It should bother me , but it doesnt, I love the car, and i will not let a few drops of oil on my garage floor kill that special bond I have with my pcar. My only worry is the car wont be as strong as it is now.

Just remember guys, we are driving V-Dubs afterall, which don't have the reputation of hondas and toyotas

Deputy, the solution is to trade your POS for a TT and be done with

Robyn's finally coming to her senses
