2001 996 C2, water pump "gone bad" advice pls . . .

Today, when driving to work i suddenly noticed smoke coming up from the engine bay
I drove to a parking lot - pretty nervous, stopped and checked. I saw water leaking, causing the smoke when hit the engine. I am pretty sure its the water pump gone bad. Hit the dealership 30 minutes later and bought a new pump. (on another car).

So - i will install tomorrow but is there anything i should be aware of ? Is it a easy DIY ? Anything else to replace ?
The car has 112K and im just wondering is this the start of a deep money pit !

Also, its a tiptronic so i guess towing is out of the question ? Only a flatbed right ?

Yes this id a DIY, just be careful and go slow. It is a PITA though. I wouldn't say this is the start of a money pit though as the water pumps on these things go out on a regular basis due to the plastic impeller. Make sure to use Porsche coolant and to get ALL the air out, I believe the fill is 7.63-8.32 US gallons or 28.9-31.5 Liters.
Yup only a flatbed! If your car is lowered have them bring a few boards 2x6's.

Hi FLA996TT and thanks again for ur advice.
No i agree - its however seems that when one thing starts to give in, others follow. Well lets see

Ok, i have the "Ultimate 996 owners guide" by Richard Hamilton and was reading that on a C2 its 22.5 liters + 1 liter extra for tiptronics (28 liters for turbos and 25 liters for GT3).
So, 23.5 liters. He also says that it should be concentrated with water, 50:50. Are we then talking approx 12 liters Porsche coolant vs. 12 liters water? I was always wondering if it should be 100% coolant fluid or ?!?

As to the air on the system - is there any specific method to get the air out ?
I was looking at my new water pump and im sure the impeller is made of metal. Is this an upgrade from the plastic one ?

Anyway - thanks again and keeping my fingers crossed for the project tomorrow

Sounds about right, keep an eye on it while filling.

If you get it pre-diluted it will be 50:50 which is the preferable way to go. If you get the concentrate you devide the 23.5 in half and that's waht you use for coolant and water, so it's 11.75 liters coolant, 11.75 liters water. NOTE: USE ONLY DISTILLED WATER NOT TAP, DISTILLED ONLY.
Never use 100% coolant, it won't work and it will destroy your radiators. Now if you get the pre-mixed (diluted) it's already 50:50 for you that's why it's preferable no guessing.

You should be able to bleed it like the brake system. Your ultimate guide should have instructions, let me do some checking for you though, I know there's loads of DYI on this subject.

Yes.

Here is a good DYI

Link to bleed:

Although it's a DYI you may want to have the dealer do it?

Hi,

Please realize that you risk damaging the engine case if the pump shaft or bearing fail, allowing the impeller to come out of position and strike the engine case.......that is why Porsche used plastic impellers...so I have read on the forums...

Good luck with the project.

I´ll give it a go today and from what i read it should be a medium easy thing to do considering i follow the instructions from a to z.

I´ll let u all know how things go and post some pics from the "operation" aswell when done.

Well guys - took the water pump out this morning finding out the propellers all were broken, see pic. I Didn't see any bits of the propellers at all.

So - im guessing whats the best thing to do ??? These bits are 100% somewhere inside the cooling system . . . .

Ouch. Power flush the cooling system a few times and pray one of those pieces aren't lodged in one of the cylinder head cooling ports. That's all you can do short of disassembling the heads.

I'd caution against running it again until you've found the pieces. That's how the catastrophic failure of my engine started...

Ok so i examined the old pump better. The propellar is a little off so i guess the bearing has failed in a period of time. Its also difficult to rotate it.
I have been going through the old coolant from the car and there is a lot of very small (dust like) debris in it. Im guessing this has been happening in a period of time. The propellar wings are all very similar wornout. So hoping its only like that.

I also called the porsche dealership today and they told me to flush all the system from radiators and down. They had not experienced similar case.
But lets bear in mind that in Iceland we only have around 39 of 911´s including all models and all years so . . .

I will do the powerflush today hoping that will do the trick.

Its so strange that this water pump failure had no prior warning signs. Never heated up un-normally, no strange sound, nothing !

Ps. The water pump i bought was OEM Porsche and it also has the plastic propellars and not the steel one as i stated earlier in the post.

Ok, water pump installed and everything back in its place.
Did the power flush and man, what came out was black debris and some bits of the propeller, see pics.

Did the bleeding, distilled water 11,75L and 11,75L coolant. Still have 2L to put on the system (have put 21,5L on it) but have to wait until everything cools down. Will do that later today. But everything looked ok, got the heat up to approx. 100 degrees, fan run hot and the engine sounded strong.

So im at least happy with with everything so far

I didn't read all of the other replies so forgive me if I'm repeating something that was already addressed. There are BUNCH of videos on the subject on youtube.

And yes, i used PEAK lifetime coolant (the gold one with black cap). The fluid is yellow / gold-ish.
