Car steering wheel shakes over 70mph

I replaced my rims recently because they were bent and caused my car to shake on the road. I have a 2004 996 C2 and my steering wheel shakes when i go past 70mph on the highway. What would be the common symptoms or quick fixes...alignment, balance tires...any suggestions.

Start with balancing your tires. Inexpensive.

Agreed, start with a balance. Are you sure the rime you purchased are true? Did you keep the same size or move up? I wouldn't think it's an alignment problem as that would make the car pull to one side or the other. Also, make sure the tires are on the correct side if unidirectional, they could be reversed. They should have been put back in the same location they were removed from.

I would actually start by checking that the wheels are true. My rears were not (left more so than right) and it was very visible when put on a lift and spun. Next step would be balancing.

go to tirerack.com and search installers that have hunter road force equipment. Have all 4 checked out..sometimes a regular balance is not good enough. I've noticed the 996's are very sensitive with wheel/tire balancing. or ask a local guy with a good set of wheel/tires to try
then move on to other possibilities

Thanks guys appreciate it. I bought new set of rims and tires and I upgraded it from 18s to 19s. I will start with getting a balance and see if it affects the current issue. I just want to have everything good to go since the weather has finally turned around and get the most performance from my new summer tires.

if you were driving on a bent rim, then you may have torn up a tie rod bushing

Do I understand correctly that the car shook with the old wheels, and now shakes with the new wheels too?

Check for fix flat liquid inside tires. Or check your rack & pinon terminals

As I recall one wheel was about $280 but that included fixing curb rash. Of that, the straightening was $150 or so. The "wheel guy" (my alignment shop subs it out) uses some kind of hydraulic method the straighten the wheel. The result is that it is like new both in terms of being true and the finish.
