Porsche 996-03 Alarm Control Fried
Hi Guys,
My car got flooded out and the alarm unit (996.618.262.02) under the seat is completely fried (has part of the unit and components fried) All of the lights come on etc but fuse C3 keeps blowing... so removed the unit and found it fried. Cannot open the front or the engine bay. so need a new one. Can I buy a second hand one and fit it in (can pick up one with the keys) ? or does it need programming into the car control center? Does anyone know of a mobile mechanic around surrey who would do this for me? Where it is I cannot get it easily out to get it towed to a mechanic (back of my house with a very narrow drive way that has a few weird angles)...... HELP .

Did you visually see it "fried"? If not, I would take out the alarm box and take off the cover and blow dry it and let it sit a day or two. After that reinstall and try it. Some get lucky and have it work again. Unfortunately I was one of the unlucky ones.

The previous owner of my 996 had the Alarm Unit replaced. The original was fried. If you do end up replacing it, make sure the Dealer does a "vehicle handoff" programming of the new Alarm. The trick here is that the Alarm will initially think it is in a brand new car (that was not yet delivered to a customer). Only a Dealer (or someone with a Porsche computer) can configure the Alarm. Also you may have to get brand new Keys so they can be programmed into the new Alarm system. All in, you really want to avoid replacing the Alarm Unit.

Hi Alpine and sjg,
Thanks for the replies. The Unit was toasted (smelled of burning and half the board blackened).
Someone said that you could desolder the chip (epprom) and resolder unto a doner unit. My keys were pretty knackered as well, so instead put the car onto a flat bed (was a job and a half) and shipped off to a specialist garage (GT-One). Will update the total cost.
DOn't know if I could have dried it out, as it got flooded when I was on holiday and I think the flooding completely submerged the unit, so unavoidable. Must remember to keep clearing out the drains every 6 months.
Thanks all for advice.
