Exhaust Hack?

Exhaust Hack?
I came across this on a Cayman forum and wondered if it could be adapted to a 996. Is there a similar clamped joint? If someone wanted louder on the cheap it might be worth exploring. Not promoting, or debating just curious.
They slid the clamp over, cut a hole in the exhaust pipe then slid the clamp back. Expose as much of the opening as you need for desired level of sound.

IMO that is not good. If you want to change the sound and flow without a whole new system the PSE or Gundo hack is the way to go. Cutting a hole like that will let exhaust gas out without passing through the muffler and will end up putting carbon monoxide into the cabin, this is why tail pipet always clear the rear bumper.

I doubt that would be a problem considering the location of the muffler.
I've seen a lot of muscle cars with exhaust ending before the rear axle with no issues. Of course they didn't have a/c and in summer the windows were down.

Please don't do it. You're driving a Porsche for crying out loud. & not some Honda's. There's good cheap mod like gundo hack. This one look very cheap & tacky. You might as well poke a hole in your muffler & call it a day. Do your baby right. just my .2c

That's funny. Just sharing info from the Cayman forum and posing the question.
People are drilling holes in their Boxster mufflers, turbo mufflers.........
Certainly not a unique concept. If it is adaptable to 996's you can undo by simply slipping the clamp all the way over the opening.
Jus an FYI

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.
As mentioned above good luck inhaling those exhaust fumes but safer doing the Gundo hack for not a lot of money. You're a 911 owner not a cayman nor a boxster lout, have some dignity man

I don't think you guys actually read the post. I did not suggest doing this, don't even know if it's adaptable to the 996. If you are adverse ignore it. It's just a concept. Have you even looked at the exhaust to explore the plausibility or are you somehow offended by the thought and fired off an email?
Personalization has always been an element of ownership. You want to wrap it matte black go for it. It's not for me but I wouldn't criticise you.
Dignity because I own a 911? I've driven Porsches since 1971 and it's nothing to get snobby about. Over the years I've owned several varieties and they all were Porsches. The 911 is iconic and has a certain mystique but they all deserve dignity.
Anybody know where I can get a set of steel wheels with hub caps and trim rings?

I shall presume the smiley face at the end of your rant was to show you typed your message with the same lightheartedness as my original message to you.
Who am I to judge, mod it or not, your wheels and they can roll how you like to pal. Although I will stand by my statement, just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.
I'm certainly not snobbish nor elitist especially with a £20k car that most Porschiphiles hate, especially with dozens of other makes & models costing 10s of 1000s more than my 11yr old C4S however if my father allowed me to drive his Bentley every once in a while that lack of snobbishness about me might just change.
Happy exhaust cutting....or not

Technically this will not work too well in terms of execution merely due to the fact that there isn't enough coupling material to still clamp onto safely.
From a theoretical standpoint though this basically is what the Fister hack does by bypassing some of the raw gasses outside of the muffler, however it does merge it into the exhaust pipe for proper routing.
From a practical perspective though, it may sound a little tinny and more like a Honda since you will not be able to get the same surface area that a 2" hole can provide as that of the Fisters. You will not even be able to get a 1.5" diameter equivalent surface area of standard PSE. I would think the most you can get is a 0.75" equivalent surface area which would not only decrease the noise output but change the timbre and frequency of the boxer motor.
I can see this working better with the lower displacement 2.7l Boxster crowd.
Why not give it a go yourself and report back?
