Old thread by now but wanted to report back. Removed the oil filter 3 times & got my over-filled oil level back to the "max" line again. Lesson learned & many thanks to the Forum for the great helpful hints & advice!

PelicanParts.com got a P-car filter wrench & some extra filter o-rings & oil plug washers to me in 2 days. Nice. Another thing learned is WalMart sells the Mobile 1, 15w-50w my Indy uses for 1/2 the price of elsewhere; a gallon of the stuff for $26-ish. Oil changes should be "cheap" now! Haha!

He didn't have to do that for me so just that alone was appreciated & so I'm not prone to complain.

I still don't know what I did incorrectly to overfill. The manual says it's 1.5 quarts from the bottom dip stick line to the top. I added 1 quart. This was after I did the complete engine warm up & waiting about 10 minutes after shutting down so I don't get it. The dip stick went from totally dry to overfilled in 1 quart. I took my time & was deliberate so imagine my surprise. Chalking this up to getting to know our new-to-us 996.

Thx to everybody for the help; I know what to do now. Cheers, Bob in AZ
For a shop to return a car with the oil level that far below full is enough to put me off the shop I think.

I always worry about removing oil from a seemingly overfilled engine. Dipsticks are not infallible. They can be used incorrectly, can have a problem that causes them to not reach all the way down to the sump, can even be from the wrong car/engine.

When the amount of oil in the engine is in question I prefer to drain the oil and then refill with the proper amount of oil to ensure the engine has the right amount of oil.

Then confirm both the digital oil level reading and the dipstick tell tale also agree.

More good advice, Mac. I view both the dash oil level readout & compare to the dipstick. In this case, both told the same story so I feel more comfy now.

As for the Indy, I understand but I've been with this shop since the '70's & so it's hard to bag on them for one oddity now after a lifetime of amazing service. Maybe "The Kid" did my oil this time; not sure. It's really a moot point; I'm doing my own oil changes from here on; it's too easy & quick.

Thx again for your thoughts; the Forum is amazing. Bob in AZ
