Overfilled Oil!

P-car Rookie Question: Is there any easy method of extracting a bit of oil (1/4 to 1/2 qt???) from an overfill situation? Here's my deal:

To my surprise, a recent Indy oil change left me short of oil 4 bars on the dash monitor. And, the dip-stick check exactly as per the Owner's Manual revealed a dry stick.

So, added a quart, fired it up again to continue to maintain engine operating temp then shut it down & waited a few minutes. Still no oil on dip-stick. So, I add another quart (1.5 qts between minimum & maximum line on dipstick as per Manual) & now the oil shows up just past the maximum line (approx 1/8").

Thus my question to the all-knowing Forum. Am trying NOT to attempt to drain a small bit from the bottom plug because, you guessed it, I'll bugger that, too! I was thinking maybe drawing oil out via small, clear fuel/oil line from either the dipstick or oil fill. But, maybe I shouldn't think anymore & just ask the Forum. And, future lesson is to add 1/2 quart at a time but for now......

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thx, Bob in AZ

I think the drain plug is your only realistic option. Just loosen it up enough to get a steady drip or light stream. DON'T take it all the way out. Also, make sure you drain to a CLEAN container. Good Luck

Drain plug. Also you did the correct thing by checking the dip stick, the electronic dip stick is not accurate. Another thing , go back to this indy and demand your money back, leaving it 4 quarts low is inexcusable not to mention the damage that could have been done. It take 9 quarts to fill.

Remove and reinstall the oil filter. Only a small amount of oil will come out

Beat me to it. Most likely the less messy option as well.

FLA996TT: Problem is I've been doing biz w/my Indy for 35-ish years & so this HAS to be an oddity. I trust him implicitly & work has been impeccable forever; I would recommend to anyone. Also, the car was in for work (leaky RMS after IMS/RMS fix) he covered under warranty paid for by the previous owner! He didn't have to do that for me so just that alone was appreciated & so I'm not prone to complain.

I still don't know what I did incorrectly to overfill. The manual says it's 1.5 quarts from the bottom dip stick line to the top. I added 1 quart. This was after I did the complete engine warm up & waiting about 10 minutes after shutting down so I don't get it. The dip stick went from totally dry to overfilled in 1 quart. I took my time & was deliberate so imagine my surprise. Chalking this up to getting to know our new-to-us 996.

Thx to everybody for the help; I know what to do now. Cheers, Bob in AZ

Very strange to go from dry to overfill with one quart, on any car. Did the previous owner install a deep sump per chance?

Back to FLA re: Deep Sump

No deep sump indicated in the records I got with purchase & it looks like standard-issue to me, so...... I maybe just need to be more exacting. Meanwhile, I'm afraid to run it until I purge a little out; it's noticeably higher than the top end of the dip-stick.

Stupid on my part; I almost didn't want to post here....

Hang in there Bob, we all learn from each other on this forum. Now for my crazy story. I dropped my Land Rover off for an oil change. I gave the guy two 5 quart jugs I had purchased from Walmart and a new filter, and off I went about my day. Thinking he would know that a Land Rover only holds 6 quarts, and that he would surely use one 5 quart jug and just a little out of the other, it didn't happen. When I came to pick up my truck, I paid him and drove off. Thinking the extra left over oil was in the back seat or somewhere, I started looking when I got home. Low and behold, I checked my oil and it was way over the dip stick. Yeap , you guessed it, he put all 10 quarts in there. Surprising the overfill did not do any damage and I drained out the overage. Stuff happens

The oil filter is a good call ! How much does it hold? I would think only 8 oz. or so...

Good story, Bernard! A little extra oil for good measure?!

Now it's "True Confessions" for me. Need to order filter wrench & the 9mm/T50 Torx for the drain plug pronto! Have been buying motorcycle parts & neglected the basics for the 996 mainly because the Indy had to do this first oil change for me with the RMS replacement. My bad & I need to focus.

Btw, still as a newb here & want to say how much I appreciate the Forum; have learned SO much (& alot I don't understand but it's all great stuff)! Thanks again to all! Bob in AZ

like mentioned above remove oil filter....install and idle the car for a bit and remove oil filter again. A couple times should be good enough

Hey Bob these school boy errors happen, I'm the dumbass who had a flat tyre and drove to the gas station to pump it. Wheel cut the tyre to shreds, cracked an alloy and the shredded tyre rubbed the paint off the rear bumper/wheel arch only to find I had the cigar lighter powered pump in the front trunk and could have inflated at home. It cost me two new tires (replace in pairs) paint repair the bumper, weld a wheel.

I'll monitor my oil levels and if in doubt give you a shout to tell me exactly how not to do it

Ursa: Many thx for the positive feedback; all of a sudden, I don't feel so badly! And, if this thread continues much more, no telling what other "True Confessions" we'll see!

I ordered the proper oil filter wrench from Pellican Parts this morning along with a new magnetic drain plug, some washers & oil filter o-rings so should have the PROPER parts to purge a little oil in a couple days. Lesson learned!

My next task is to read up on how to properly jack the car up without a major screw up & I really want some side rockers to update my look. Then, there's some new wheels, and...... it goes on & on! Love this car & really appreciate everyone on this Forum!
