DIY Oil Change in My 03' 996 Coupe, took about 10 minutes.

It took about 10 minutes and 3 pieces of tools.
Approximately 9 quarts of Mobil1 0W-40. AND YES THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE DOES READ UP TO 4.5 BAR DURING REVS. ALTHOUGH THE MANUAL STATES 3.5 BAR @ APPROX. 5000 RPM on a FULLY WARM ENGINE.

ENGINE OIL AT 3000 FACTORY MILES

DONE, This is by-far an easier oil change than most of the Honda's and Toyota's that I work on.

I will put you in charge of oil changes at the work on cars day. We usually get the women to do them.

Looks too easy..

Only thing to watch out for - Might pay to wear some latex gloves when changing the filter etc, as used engine oil can be absorbed through the skin and is carcinogenic.

Good point. I usually wear gloves for safety, but since this was the first oil change, I wanted it to be special, I wanted to feel everything.

COSTAS: hey I'm making a trip to Sydney, I hope to see a lot of right hand drive Porsches there. Maybe I'll see you on the road, I'll also be driving my brother's 996 when I get there.

I reside in Adelaide (South Australia) so unless I take the C2 for a 1200Km road trip (just to get to Sydney) you probably will not see me there...

Enjoy your stay in Sydney and make sure you have a South Aussie wine or two during your stay - We do have some world renowned wines from my region...

So, if I can change the oil myself in 10min, then what reason is there to still pay the Porsche dealer $350 bucks to do a 15K maintenance which is essentially the same thing? What value add am I getting?

Nice instructions.

What size is the allen driver? What tool did you use for the filter?

Allen driver is 8mm and you can use a standard oil filter wrench for the filter canister. I found a metal cap type at Autozone that fit. I took 2 or 3 out into the parking lot, laid down behind the rear passenger wheel and tested each to find which one fit. The filter canister is very accessible w/out having to raise the car and my car is lowered.

When I change my oil, I back the C4S up to the edge of the garage so that the rear end is hanging over the lip of the garage. This gives me plenty of room to get under the car and do the oil change - no rack required.

My only word of caution is that the oil comes out very fast! Make sure you have a good sized container to catch the used oil - mine holds 15 quarts. I also put some newspaper down underneath it, just in case i get a little spill.

Couple of tips for oil change

- Car can be jacked up and lowered onto 2 by 10's doubled up in the rear and single in the front to keep it level (this will result in a 1.5" difference between rear and front, which could compensate for slope in garage floor).
- Put a screen over the drain pan so that when drain plug falls out, the screen catches it
- Put down newspapers around the drain pan to catch splatters
- Wear heavy rubber gloves and goggles to avoid getting burned by hot oil.
Tools needed:
- 8 mm allen wrench or allen hex socket (someone recommended T50 Torx bit as better fit)
- Porsche oil filter wrench (# 000 721 920 40) (tool 9204)
- 27 mm socket (or a wrench big enough to fit the oil filter wrench)
- 10 quart oil catch pan, but 15-16 quart is preferable.

Oil Change Interval

What is the ideal interval? I know what the manual says, however I follow consumer reports advice (5-7.5k) on my other cars, which is above the mfg recommended.
