Question about my 996 ignition internals. spinning key
Hello again. I just fixed my cam position sensor issue and she started like new. ran great and I was happy the job was completed. However, the Porsche gremlins said NO and when I went to remove my key from the ignition, the entire ignition spun around and around like the exorcist. I then could not get the key to turn the engine over. Ahhh! really! My ignition/electronic switch is only 3 months old. I took out the key ignition assembly and (I hope someone is familiar with this) and I noticed a large curved black plastic part that will compress to possibly allow the switch to turn in the housing. The black curved part depresses, but DOES NOT pop out all the way again, unless I flick it. The tiny spring is sticking and so it seems this allows the entire ignition to just keep spinning. Am I on the right track here? I have never worked on the mechanical workings of the ignition before. I think I need a new ignition switch/cylinder. I will probably need a new key as well. If so, can I swap the electronics from key to key so I'm not carrying two keys? Help if anyone has any info on this issue. Thanks!

I was able to dissemble the entire locking mechanism and found I have the updated version of the outer housing and wheel lock. I methodically removed all the ignition/internal parts that I could and cleaned everything, then lubed it all up. I reinstalled my now working lock mechanism and she fired up and started on the first try. My key is now acting as typical. BUT AGAIN after the first start up, I cleaned up and went to move my car. Turned the key and my lights came on, stereo, but the starter did nothing and my AC did not come on. Why would she start on the first try, run, and then now won't turn over? REALLY???? I'm nearly positive this is my ignition switch going bad again. Ordered a new one. Waiting. Still not running. All the fuses on DS test fine. My FOB opens the doors and allows the steering wheel to unlock. Guessing the electronic ignition part was damaged when my key was just spinning around. Just posting in case anyone else has a similar issue. Surprised no one has commented. Anyway, Ill post back in 1-2 days after my ignition switch is replaced. Hope someone gets some help from this. Good to check your set-up if the ignition switch goes out. The upgraded switch is shallow and has one shorter cylinder. The OEM is longer with one large cylinder for the plug and a second narrow cylinder for the key side. Mine works only for models with Lock Assembly # 996 347 017 07. Just FYI. look before you replace it as it will fail if you own the car for long. On my 3rd and it's "upgraded"

That ignition switch stuff is a pain, I just went through that on mine but I didn't have the upgraded locking mechanism. I guessed it was stock when I ordered the replacement switch and was glad to see it was black when I took the switch out. Is your switch white? Glad your up and running.

Mine is upgraded but failed because my ignition hardware was not working and just allowed the key to spin around and around which ruined the electronic ignition plug. This is my second "upgraded" plug, so I guess it's not a great upgrade. My last ignition switch was throwing a seat belt receptical code. Strange it can do that.
