Odd noise from dash

I searched and learned about a lot of noises our 996's make, but no one described one like what I heard today.
It sounds like a poorly lubricated speedo cable, but it doesn't change pitch with speed, except for disappearing when the car stops. Or kinda like a bb rolling around inside a Rx pill bottle. It did seem to stop briefly, a couple times during my highway trip. It was unaffected by bumps, turns, braking, ventilation fan on/off, radio/CD player, anything. It occurred in city driving also, starting up as soon as the car got moving. It's pretty discrete, you have to have the windows up to hear it. I guess I could get a louder exhaust to mask the sound, but it just bugs me that my wonderful Porsche is not 100%.
I hope someone knows what this is. Thanks in advance.

You sure the noise is from the dash?

Reads more like a wheel bearing or even a dragging brake pad or possibly something caught between the brake rotor and the brake rotor splash shield. Twice I've had something get caught like that -- first a twig then a small rock. In both cases though the noise was intolerable. No way I could have driven the car any distance.

Backing up and turning the steering wheel lock to lock cleared the twig. For the rock I had to jack up the right front corner of the car and remove the wheel and pry the splash shield a bit to let the rock (about the size of a small pea) fall out.

Actually, I'm not sure of the source, just that it's in front of the driver. Thanks for the tip, it hadn't occurred to me. I have the car off the ground now, so will spin the wheels and look close.
