weird sound from engine

I have this weird sound coming form my engine. It sounds like somehting winding up and the higher I rev it the louder the sound gets. It is a medium high pitch sound like something maybe is loose. I am going to bring the car to the dealer tomorrow but if anyone might know what it is I am curious so I have something to tell the guy.
Thanks

If, when the noise is present, you quickly accelerate, does the noise increase? Check your sepentine belt.

yeah whenever there is an increase in acceleration or revs the sound gets louder. at engine idle speed you can't hear it.

Sounds like you might just need a new belt. Cost: $40. Install time: 5 minutes. If Porsche does it: Priceless.

the only thing is that all of a sudden this noise came along. it wasn't like it has gradually gotten worse. Do you still think it is the belt?

With engine idling and the noise being heard, spray the belt with water. If necessary, have someone sit in the drivers seat and increase the revs until the noise is present. If the noise changes, it is the belt. It is possible that it is something else like a bearing on the alternator or other pullley, but 9 out of 10 times it's just the belt. They wear and stretch and get dirty and slip.

Out of curiosity, what does the serpentine belt do? Spin the fan?

The belt drives the accessories in the engine compartment. A/C. alternator, power steering pump and water pump.

so the sound from my engine area is either a pulley or belt tensioner. And if those 2 things dont fix it then it is my water pump. So the car is going in for service this week
Thanks for the help
