996 - Cracked Cyclinder - What are my options?
Hi All,
I had a beautiful 996 with only ~46k miles (75k km) on it, when I experienced a cracked cylinder in the block. I immediately shut the car off, and had it towed to a shop. I then received the bad news after having the cylinder scoped.
The mechanic (whom I completely trust) made a ballpark estimate of 18-25k CAD to get a new shortblock installed - depending on what else needs to be done as well. Several shops around town have stated that this is reasonable.
I've been offered a small amount for the car - as is - from the shop.
Are there any other options? Is there a market for "donor" cars? The thing was beautiful , and I can't help but feel like there might be a better solution.
Thanks in advance for any input

I am worried about that for my 01 with 44k miles, not worth putting money into a new motor and not worth anything without a motor. The only real option is to find a wrecked car with a good motor and do a transplant. That is what I would do as my dad gave me this car he bought new when he was no longer able to drive and I will keep it just for that.

you can get a used engine for a few grand, its a fairly simple swap. Its just not worth tearing into one of these engines anymore... plus you could part out pieces from the old engine, make a little $$$ back.

Copart or any insurance auction would be the my route if ever faced with a engine failure,as most of crashes are front end.
Dont by through Copart thier fees are to high. https://www.autobidmaster.com/en/ is an option.
The IMS would retrofitted at this time also.
the down side is your stuck with a shell to part out or dispose of.
here a quick search

I would consider an LS conversion (or other conversion options) at some point. I am buying a new to me 99 model that recently had the IMS done, but if that motor dies, I”ll sort it then. If you love the car, think outside of the box for options.

I thought about the LS swap may want to get the opinion of someone who has done the conversion already.
I also saw an electric conversion a few years back.
