Besides the normal brakes and tires i think its a really reliable car. I am actually selling mine to get another porsche. Nicely modded. Looking for a nice home.
Thanks,
Todd

I would be looking your car this weekend if it wasn't across the country...I'm the guy who emailed you earlier this week.
Best of luck in your sale,
Jack

All i have to say is my 02 M3 was bulletproof before i started heavily modifying it, it was awesome. Very much how my 996tt is even modded after normal maintenance, its solid, get in and go reliability is amazing, i assume even more so for a NA 996!
996tt was much more expensive then my m3 maintenance wise, but 996 to M3 i would say yea, about equal

M3 : Since you're looking at used M's I would also advise you to get one with the warrantee and service plan. The catch is that the BMW extended warrantee must have been purchased by the ORIGINAL owner before the original 4/50 warrantee expires, no exceptions.
I believe the extended service contract can be purchased by anyone, though I'm not positive. It lists for $1195 and must be purchased before the 4/50 from the original in service date.
Mercury Insurance offers a "Platinum warrantee policy" that I've heard good things about, but I have no first hand experience with them.
I'd recommend getting a 2003.5 (or newer obviously) if that's in your budget. Additionally, if you're buying from a dealer, get the VIN and make sure it has the CPO warrantee by calling BMW NA yourself. Happy hunting.

^ Thanks for the tip.
Just from looking at both these forums for the last couple months though has shown that both these cars are pretty reliable. I honestly would feel pretty confident buying a 911 without a extended warrenty.

I have an 05 m3 cab and a 911-- too different cars-- m3 is quick and nimble lotta fun-- u feel like u get in go no worries
911 is a lethal weapon-- everything is fine tuned and close to perfect-- handling, shifting, sound, look
Also the m3 back is a tad bigger than 911 but still useless for passengers
