What is this sound at 3K RPM in first gear?

Right when I pass 3K RPM's in first gear I hear a slight rasp or very very rapid ticking or scratchy noise. It is hard for me to describe.. I think it might happen on 2nd gear as well, but its hard to say becuase the wind noise. I have my windows down to hear it, with the windows up, I do not hear it.

I think the noise is more noticeable when the car is either cold and even afer it is just warmed up... the nose is not as noticeable after the car is fully, fully warmed up. Any ideas what this could be? I hope its nothing bad!

isn't 3K one of the switchover points in the variable cam/intake system?

Correct. It could be the cylinoid (sp?) that controls the Variocam.

that is at the vario cam kick in , but you have give us more details, is it an engine noise? or is something rubbing, like exhaust?

it definately sounds like its coming from the engine & it is at around the same RPM each time. Its not like a rattle, its like a rasp or scratchy noise. Maybe I have super sensitive ears?

The answer to your problem is to always "floorboard" the gas pedal on take-off until you hit 5,000 rpm's or redline......that way the noise will either go by so fast you won't notice or the engine noise will drown it out....

Am I an engineering genius or what?

I thought an 04 vario cam is fully variable. No single switch over point.

Since your car should be under warranty, get it checked out by the dealer. Sound is very hard to describe and for others to understand. I had a grinding noise in the gear box. The service advisor advised to ignore it. After 3 month on the phone explaining, I got so annoyed and drove down there. Immediately they decides to swap the gear box out.

Is it a metallic noise....like a faint friction sound?? I have the same in my P....comes from the engine I think...it had it from the very beginning.
