Nailed by laser. I need a jammer...

Well I got my first speeding ticket a few days ago...

I was on a windy, canyon road and was accelerating hard out of a corner only to be zapped by a laser radar by a motocycle officer who was set up in an ideal location to catch spirited drivers. V1 let me know I was dead meat...

So now I'm looking at a hefty ticket and wondering why I didn't look into laser jammers before now. I've done some research and found that at least three (Escort, Bel, Blinder) seem to do a very good job of jamming laser.

Any experiences with these or jamming laser in general?

Thanks for the tips, everyone. One more question: has anyone tried the "Veil" absorbant coating for headlights and license plates? At leat one comparison test found that it reduced the laser's ability to detect speed quite a bit...

LMAO, quote from Lidatek's web page...

"The Laser ECHO LE-20 only echoes for 5 seconds and then shuts off and recycles for 60 seconds. This allows a driver to correct their speed before getting a ticket. Our purpose is not to encourage speeding, but to allow people who are following the flow of traffic or who have drifted above the speed limit to adjust to the proper speed before being fined."

Just curious ... has anyone heard of laser being used by cops in California?

Pigs in Cali . . . excuse me . . . law enforcement officers in the state of California are known to use radar (laser) guns to track their suspect's travelling speed. I've been nailed quite a few number of times especially on my bike up in the canyons. Occasionally I can elude capture when I'm on two wheels especially in traffic but when I'm in a car there's no "cat and mouse" chase.

By law, a speeding motorist is entitled to viewing the radar gun and the exact speed the officer caught your red-handed at. If the officer can't prove that you were speeding then you have a good chance at contesting and beating the citation. I know that officers in Los Angeles now get paid double for showing up in traffic court for a motorist contesting his/her citation. Whereas previously the officers would not get paid for additional time and most of the time wouldn't show up on the scheduled court dates.

>> oink, oink! <<

Asun99, my understanding is that radar and laser are different. I know cops in CA use radar. That's why I have a hardwired V1 w/remote display in my TT. The radar bands (Ka, K and X) beep often on my V1, but rarely does the L (Laser) band ever sound off. However, this past weekend my laser ('L') band went off when I was driving. It beeped several times very rapidly, stopped, then repeated itself. I slowed down to look for cops but didn't see any. That's why I'm wondering if cops in CA use laser to catch speeders or could it have been some other car's laser jammer playing games with my V1?

hey John . . . didn't know about the differences. Interesting. Let me give my "law enforcement" buddies a call and ask them. I'll let you know when I find out.

Here's the scoop . . . I asked my buddy who works in one of the agencies out here in L.A. and he informed me that they do in fact use both laser and radar. Most of the law enforcement agencies are gradually evolving towards laser because of the precision and lower level of maintenance compared to the archaic radar gun. He said that each officer has to be certified to be able to operate either the laser or radar guns.

The trick to a laser gun is that the officer must be stationary while pointing at the target or else a discrepancy will occur. Therefore some CHP (California Highway Patrol) cars can only be equipped with radar devices that shoot out 2 different signals. My buddy mentioned that one signal (low doppler?) measures how fast the CHP car is travelling while the other signal (high doppler?)tracks the target vehicle. Otherwise, the CHP officers are trained to visually estimate the speed of your vehicle. Their "guess" has to be within a 5 MPH variance or else they wouldn't be able to pass their certification. He said most old timers at the CHP can guess your speed within a 1 MPH variance just by viewing the car in transit. It's like walking into a shoe store and the salesperson knows your shoe size without you even trying on a shoe.

Words of advice . . . if you ever get cited and decide to be brave enough to dispute the violation then go to the clerk's desk of the traffic court assigned and subpoena the originating officer to provide evidence that the radar / laser gun was tuned within the past 10 days of your citation. The officers are suppose to tune their radar / laser guns every so often to get precise readings. Hopefully, if ythe officer can't support that bit of info then cross your fingers and hope you're off the hook!

Hope this info helps.

For any of you who many have interest in the new Lidatek about to be released (the LE-30), there is a group buy going on over in one of the BMW forums:

John, also be aware that many of the new GM product tail lights, especially the SUV's, set off the V1 laser alert.
