How often should oil be changed ?
I know this sounds stupid but on my M3 it was every 15k because of the oil type used but I just wanted to find out how often you guys change your oil.My car is just a 00 996 coupe. Thanks for the help guys !

And Porsche recommends the filter be changed evey other oil change. Do most follow this or replace each time?

I get mine changed based on time vs. miles as mine is not a DD (once in the spring and once in the fall). Always change the filter as I have the filter cut in half to look for what it is collecting.
Interesting I will try that since mine is an older 996 I am curious as to what has been going through that sucker !

How does the fact that the TT burns so much oil relate to how often the oil has to be changed?
Some of us go through a liter ever 500 miles some even less...I would assume the fact that we keep adding oil means it is overal 'fresher' than in a car that doesn't burn oil..
I change mine often due to the age of the oil not the miles..I have only 11K miles on an 02...

Here is some food for thought. I have had both Mercedes and BMW's with the free service included during the factory warranty period. Both manufacturers will only change your oil for free if the service computer says so, REGARDLESS of the time or mileage. My Benz went 17,500 miles and 2.5 years before the service light went on. Porsche invokes both the mileage and the time period method of determining when to change oil. I wonder what their position would be if they were providing free service like Benz and BMW. I have a feeling they would let the car's computer do the decision making. Seems like when they are paying, it's OK to go 15K miles, but when you are paying, it's a different story.

I like to use miles in determining when to change the oil in my cars, and like many I change the oil more frequently than suggested by the OEM. Since I do these oil changes myself I choose easy to track periods like 5K or 10K miles. For my daily driver, these distances eliminate any concern about how many months it’s been.
On a related note, the literature I've read on synthetic oils state that they have improved additive packages, but they don't always explain why. These were really required in order for synthetics to be cost effective when compared to conventional oil; i.e. synthetics' higher cost could be offset by longer run periods, but these longer periods REQUIRED additive packages that could keep up.

I did mine at 10k yearly. Oil was still OK and not in bad shape. I think factory recommendation at 15k every 2 years is fine. FWIW, if you read carefully, it is every 2 years (not yearly). You have to inspect the car yearly but oil change is every 2 years. Of course, it all depends on how much freeway driving you do. If you track the car or sit in traffic a lot, doing it often is necessary.
