Window tinting.

I am thinking about getting my windows tinted and want some recommendations. I like being able to see my surrounds clearly so I don't want to go too dark... just something to cut down the glare. Any ideas?

I also need a referral to a great installer in N. Florida area.

Hey Britt,

Great move on the window tint... especialy with the warmer weather coming up. You will find the window tint will save your interior from fading and you will not have to run your AC as hard to keep cool. The most important aspect of a good tint install is to find a good installer. Its a clear medium, so the real work is in the details. Find a shop that has been in town for a while and has experienced installers. FL does have a legal limit on how dark you can go on the front windows. I would go to full legal max on the front and a shade darker in the rear. You should have no problems seeing out at any time. Good luck.

Britt

I have 50% Huper Optik Ceramic Tint on mine. Cuts down the glare and it's very easy to see out. I went with a light 50% becaues in CA it is illegal to tint the driver and passenger windows. In the day time you can see a hint of tint and at night it darker.

tints

I've had my last few cars tinted. What I've learned is that the darker the tint, the lower the percentage; i.e., a 20% "limo" tint is far darker than the 35% tint I run, or the 50% tint that most states allow. With 35%, you might still get a ticket, but each state has different rules. I used to live in FL and I seem to recall that tinting is not an issue there at all, presumably due to the climatic conditions. The 35% tint jobs on my cars have all been between $150 and $185, so it is pretty inexpensive. Hope this "illuminates" the issue!

Three very different lighting situations...I am running 35%. At night, you can't see me at all, during the day, barely. I really like Kirby's tint, it looks very classy on his color car, however for mine, it wouldn't have worked.

Thanks Max. I appreciate the lead. What tint did you get? I'm sort of undecided on the hue and %. Don't kinow what's allowed in FLorida.

THis is what I had on my 98 993S

Hey Don,

The legal limits in FL for visible light transmission (VLT) are 28% on the front windows and 15% in the back. . Some shops will go darker, but the long arm of the law has been known to reach out and do a roadside removal with a razor blade. Does not happen often, but I have heard of it.

They offer a dyed film, a metalic film, and a hybrid film. I did the hybrid film in charcoal.

Similar to Itzkirb(in almost every way except the side skirts!) I went with 50% on my Seal Grey. Here are the pics(not the best but the do they job):

Looks dark from this angle:

But dead on it's not too dark.

I love the tinted look - I have an 01 C2 Lapis Blue and think tinting the windows would help the overall look of the car.

I live in california (Thousand Oaks area) and dont know what I am allowed to do. One person told me 'not allowed to tint the front or driver/passenger' - well that will make the car just look silly.

So what is the law?

But also - what are people actually allowed/getting away with?
Any recommended installed in or about Thousand Oaks?

Thanks all in advance.

Having lived is Southern California most of my life, I've gone through several window tickets during the years! California law allows "no" window tint on the driver's or passenger's windows. I've been written tickets for super light tint to limo tint. What I've noticed is if you drive "conservatively" the police usually leave you alone. But every so often you'll find that motorcycle cop that's looking to write his last ticket before the day's end and wham. So I would say just go for whatever looks good. If you get a ticket it's only a fix it ticket. It doesn't go on your driving record but you do have to get the tint removed before you can have the ticket written off.

Good luck!
