I would still pay the shipping - but the total risk ends up being much lower dollar wise.

You might try looikng into a national PPI service. Might have a branch in Jersey. My guy traveled an hour and he had alot of experince with 996's; alot in Texas.

Another question: How do you solve the chicken and egg problem of sending payment before receiving car or sending car before receiving payment?

It seems that it either has to work on trust by both sides or some sort of escrow arrangement.

Like I said earlier, they'll want the upper hand, and they have the most at steak, so you'll probably have to send them the check first.

Several years ago I purchased an NSX from a high-line retailer in Springfield, MO. There was no trade involved.

First thing I did was check out their references. One was a fairly well know guy in Dallas that had purchased several Ferraris from them. Everything checked out and they'd been in business many years.

I sent them a 20% deposit and they shipped the car to me for final inspection. The deal was that if the car was not as described then I'd get a full refund of my deposit but I'd be out the inbound shipping charges of $450. I had the car shipped to a local Acura dealership for the PPI. They found a very minor interior trim piece had some damage which the seller immediately agreed to pay for. Everything else checked out and I submitted a certified check for the balance.

All in all it was an extremely smooth transaction. I will consider doing it again once I sell my 996 cab.

You, buying from a certified dealer, should have little concern about sending your trade prior to receiving your Porsche as long as the agreement is clearly stated with the stipulations you've described.

Good luck,

Bart

Bart, good to hear of a positive experience.

So far, the dealer seems to be bending over backwards to make me comfortable. I just have to send them $2500 and a photo-copy of the title to my trade. Then, they will ship me the C4 for my approval. The truck driver will be the escrow agent and I'll pay him the balance and he'll take my trade back if I approve the C4.

Beforehand, they will give me a letter signed by the GM that states that the whole transaction is voidable if I'm not happy.

I'll update you with what happens.

I guess that's all you can ask for. What about the PPI? Are you comfortable doing it yourself and do you know what to look for?

I think I can handle the general checkout to make sure nothing gross is wrong.

Anybody have a 996 specific checklist?
