Burning oil?

I took a 400 mile trip over the last two days and noticed when I refueled when I got back that my oil level was low. My 911 is an '03 and has 5000 miles on it and was purshased new last June. Does this seem odd? Why would it burn up oil already?

it was at the bottom of operating level on the stick. I'm just surprised it burned oil so early in it's engine life and wanted to see if you guys have encountered this before.
Jeru was burning oil when we went to the meet in Orlando (needed a gasket) but he has 50000 mile on his car.

In my experience, a 996 burning a quart after 5,000 miles is not unusually high.

Rob, how do you have so little miles on your car? I see your car everywhere! GT3 aerokit with the 911 badge on the back, right?

Thanks guys. I put a quart in it yesterday. Just wanted to make sure.

Ed, I have a company car also. I only drive my baby on the weekends or when it counts. By the time the weekends come around I can't wait to drive it! All the sweeter.
How many miles do you have on your new ride? It's beautiful by the way, I saw the pics u posted. Congrats!

It's very normal for a new Porsche to use oil. And it can do so at a rate of a half a quart every 1000 miles or so until the engine is fully "broken" in. Typically this does taper off after 5000 miles. I believe you are just fine.

After about 450 miles on my 04 C4S, the dealer topped off my oil with abot 1/2 quart. Then it always read full on my oil check until just yesterday after the CC meet and run (let's call it spirited driving).

Milage at that point was about 2200. Added another 1/2 quart.

So roughly, I've burned/added 1 quart in 2200 miles. Not bad compared to the break in oil guzzler my M5 was.
