PSE disapointment

Just bought a C4S 04 have had it for a couple of months and been thinking of putting a PSE on. Yesterday at the dealer they just recived a C4S Cab. with the factory PSE. Went for a test ride and really did not think the differance was worth the expense. I have read that the sound gets better with age but I'm still not impressed. I have to justify spending $4,000.00 cdn. installed with tax. I wanted to get out of the car and say get one of these on my car right away. Am I been to critical.

I think your absolutely correct. The cost without performance improvement and without a significant aural note, is not worth it. You are not being hypercritical at all. Europipe however is very worth it but I don't think they offer it on non turbo cars. I could be wrong. You have proved a very important point with exhausts that everyone needs to remember: LISTEN to it before you sink the cabbage.

I don't understand that conclusion. Was the hard top on the Cab? Was the top and windows up? I put PSE on my Cab and it's MUCH louder and nicer sounding than the stock setup. I love it. I will say with the top and windows up, the difference is not much which I like. If I crack a window, it sounds great...

On the cost side, you should be able to do better than 4K cdn. You can purchase the system for $1,595US and have it installed for $100US...

genelap, have you considered looking at the Fabspeed exhaust? I just recently had them installed and LOVE them. And the price is right.

This is my 2nd C4S with PSE and they have been both LOUDER than a stock C4S.
I removed the hard top last week and was amazed with how much Louder it was driving with the top down than it was with my previous C4S coupe. I know it's an expensive option, but that shouldn't come as a surprise, Porsches are expensive.

For me, it's the 1st option I pick if it's on the option sheet

The top was up on the Cab and I agree if the top was down it would be just right. But my car is a coupe and the windows are very seldom down, either to cold out or to hot. I had a couple of boxsters before this and the sound at around 5,000rpm was awesome. On the cost side the dealer wants $3,500.00 cdn plus tax 15%. They will only install with full electonics. On the other hand the short shift kit just out by Porsche is great.

I'm really surprised to read your comments regarding the sound difference. I have a C2 coupe and there is a world of difference. Keep in mind that the factory install automatically switches PSE to quiet mode between 30 & 40 MPH, so if you spent a lot of time at that speed range, that could account for your not hearing a sound difference.

Regarding the price, you can buy PSE for around US$1,600 and have just the mufflers installed by an independent shop for around US$100.

I am surprised you think that about the PSE. I had mine installed in the first week of February and it is loud. It has certainly become louder since then too. I cannot hear anything when the top is down and the electronics come in handy when on the phone.

As Poursha said, if it was factory fitted remove the speed sensor and you will enjoy it even more. The fact that it cuts out between 50 70km/h really sux. These are the speeds I am mostly at during normal suburban driving and I want to hear my loud exhaust.

I bought my p-car 3 weeks ago, stuck on the PSE after 1 week, really did not like the sound that much the first 1.5 weeks it was breaking in, and now I really like it.

I'm not sure whether it was my car breaking in, the mufflers breaking in, or some combo, but which ever reason, if you just drove the new C4S cab with factory installed PSE, I'd say from my own experience that the sound you heard is NOT going to be what it sounds like after breaking in.

If I had to quantify this difference in tone, timber, growl, whatever - the "cool" sounds of an aggressive sport exhaust - it's a night and day, 50-75% difference.

p.s. better thing to do would be to find somebody in your area that has a PSE II exhaust that's already broken in on a p-car with same engine type as yours, listen to it both outside and inside with windows/top up and down.

then decide.

Yeah, Not long ago, in a previous thread, it was listed near the top of the "Must Have" List. So I ordered it based on everyone's suggestions........now this??????? What is he talking about? is it a break-in issue, or the 30-40 mph thing?

I had the Fabspeed high flow exhaust for 2 weeks on my 00 996 cab and had finally admit to myself that I wasn't completely satisfied with it. It just sounded like a ricer and could not stand that deep throaty sound. (Even the resonance that they claim isn't noticable) I think I mislead myself when I only heard this exhaust on-line repeatedly and when I heard it for the first time on my car that it wasn't quite what I was looking for. I think deep down inside I was hoping the car would have more of an air cooled engine sound like in my previous 87 carrera!!- I still they have the true Porsche engine note that makes my hair stand up whenever I hear one!!
