E55 vs 996
Hi guys, I had my 996 c2 about little over a year now, I love it, I think 3.6 engine is set for me, however the only issue or concern I have is the car is fairly small for me, I was thinking about getting a E55 a nice size with decent power, yesterday I was happened to run with clk500 which was pretty fast kept up with my car pretty good, and started wondering the potential power of a E55 what do you guys think should I trade it in?

I know what you mean. I bought a P-car for fun ride and Bimmer 545i for daily driving with more space.
If you only can afford one car, then I think it's good decision for you to get a Merc. I had some runs with E55 with my 545i (mods) very impressive. I'm not a Merc. man more of Bimmer.

Not sure if ths matters but Mercedes has one of the worst reliability ratings of ALL manufacturers....Everyone I know with one has had MAJOR reliability issues. I almost bought a CL500 and when I did the research I ran from the deal....

I work for Mercedes-Benz, yes we have had issues, but its getting a lot better now. Cars that just come out the first year will always have bugz, and cars that are on their third towards last year would be the better buys. E55 has some massive torque, a lot of people who have the E55s dont even consider the new E63 cause the driving sensation isnt the same. But there is defnitely more power.

If you want a car that has great handling braking and an impenetrable chassis, than do not buy a mercedes e55. I have one ands its horrific. If all you want is acceleration and the feel of massive torque than go ahead. Its the equivalent of nascar and formula one. The porsche cars are formula one and the mercedes cars are nascar. I just recently sold my 996 turbo, but i still have the e55 and i hate it. I had to sell the turbo cause my wife could not drive stick.

Before I got my 996, I looked at an E55 and at a M5 (surprised nobody has brought it up yet). The Merc was too bland for me (local dealer sucks) and the M5 was the right blend, but I always wanted a 911....

wasuki - keep the Porsche and buy a Lexus or Toyota as a second car if you can - That's what I did and I love the combination of driving these different vehicles. I have the LX470 and the 996. The LX 470 is such a reliable vehicle - no issues at all - just get in and have fun - plently of room! - It sucks gas though.

Autobahn cruiser v. Mountain blaster. Two different cars. The e55 is a torque monster. Pulls like a frieght train but definitely has a lot more mass than my 996. As has previously been said, you might want to decide first whether you need a sports car or a sporty sedan. Personally, I've been eyeing the prices on the C55's as a replacement for my wife's car ...

My friend has a E55, which I borrowed for a week while my 996 was down. I have to say, I'm not impressed with E55 much. Yes, great power, definately faster than 996 in straight line, but it doesn't have the sporty feel to it. It's like driving a very fast boat~ But if you don't have to have a sports car, go for it.

Having a couple of low mile AMG's they are totally different for different uses. A viable option could be look at clean low mile W210 body E55 as the prices are now reasonable. There are plenty good tuners available to mod it as it is lighter and more nimble than the W211's. This could be a good 2nd. car. Then you can enjoy both for different uses. A hot sleeper sedan can sometimes be as much fun as a sports car.
