How big of a deal to use 0w40 oil?

Don't you think I'd better off changing my oil with mobil one 5w30 or 10w40 every 5K than with 0w40 every 12k?

I find that 0w40 is hard to source locally and dealer wants quite a lot of money $10/qt. I can get all the 5w40 oil that I need for under $5/qt.

Dealer says that 5W30 doesn't flow "enough" for the porsche engines, which I feel like a fundamentally incorrect statement.

Use 0w40 and be done with it.....why risk it? If the dealer says you need 0w40 then find it locally, or mail order it....I heard Pep Boys and Autozone carry it, but its a store by store basis....also check Target and Walmart....I have heard bad things about other oil weights...

But is it really the best oil for that engine? I've read the manual and couldn't see anything about 0-40. All they talk about is 5W30 or 10w40.

depends on location and weather i guess. in CA we use, or dealer suggests 0W-40. use what's recommended. the price difference does not make sense at all. 50 bucks for 10k miles? c'mon.

Well, I was thinking about it in the chase of changing it more often than 10k

I remember reading somewhere that the thinner oil is either advantageous or necessary because of the smaller oil passages used to lubricate the variocam system. I think I pay about $6 per quart at a local Advance Auto Parts store near my house, but even at $10 per quart it is one of the least expensive items for the car. I think the latest bulletin that came out also has 5W-40 on the list as well. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I would really like to see a TSB that actually specifies the proper oil for proper climates. The owner's manual only specifies standard types of oil and says nothing about exotic varieties such as 0w40 or 5w50 etc.

Ask the dealer.....oh, you did...what more do you need? The dealer in your area says use 0w40...use it and be done with it. Like Arling said...its like $50-100 every 10k miles....spring for what the dealer says....again, no need to get it from there...just get mobil 1 0w40 full synthetic....

Mobil 1 at Autozone

According to the link, its normally stocked in the local stores and its $6.19 a quart.....

5w40 and 5w50 is approved as long as the temps dont get below 25 degrees...in Texas winters I think it does get down there...for those temps...then the ONLY oil that is approved is 0w40....

I've got the Porsche recommended oils pdf right here. How do I post it. It supercedes all owner manuals.

Peter-

I get my oil at a local Carquest place. You can get it here in Houston if you want to make a short day trip over to get it. We could also try to talk to the manager and see about getting larger quantities for a reduced price if you wanted.

my mechanic recommends 5w30 Mobil 1 fully snth.) just for flow reasons. While I know everyone won't agree he says flow is better the an the pressure of 5w50. My car is s/c and i run a smaller pulley than spec and it pulls verey well and never an issue and i'm on 11.5k miles with 72.3k on the odo. As long as i keep the maf clean it runs well and idles well. This is only one persons expericence and should be viewed as such.
