Bruce, in the technical data section of the Owner's Manual there is a section that talk about it.
1st = 38 mph
2nd = 70 mph
3rd = 101 mph
4th = 125 mph
5th = 153 mph
6th = 183 mph
This is just an estimate as the book does not give you the actual number but rather just a graph.

This calculator will give you a general idea, although it’s not 100% accurate enough to check the speedo with because of aerodynamics and some other things.

Just drive by a cop. They are always polite enough to stop me and tell me my speed, even write it down for me so I don’t forget. What great people.

HUH???? Thats the FIRST thing you should do....study it like your life depends on it....it'll let you know about the cars self check system, oil level, and all the little things this cars does that are NORMAL, but are sooooo different form any other car. I didnt and every time I filled up, I thought the car was overheating. Couldnt figure out why it would do that only after filling up?...lol...it was telling me the oil level was fine.

You can see the unadjusted speed by using the display on the climate control screen.

Press and hold in the recirculate and the top (arrow up) buttons on the right side of the panel for a few seconds. The left screen will change. Using the + key below that screen, adance so the display reads 6c. Then press the center vent button once. The display will show you your coolant temp.

To go back to normal, simply press AUTO.

What an idiot I am. Sorry, I only posted the code for the coolant. I believe the speed in km is 20c. A scanner will also show you the uncorrected speed.

Here you go. almost everything you wanted to know about the secret codes in your HVAC center display. This is for Boxster but should be mostly the same for the 996. Do a search on RL, here and Rtech for even more info.

http://www.cb-racing.com/boxster_AC.html

FYI, everything that is displayed is metric for speed, temp, etc
