Supposedly the headlight design for the 996 isn't safe for this type of upgrade...

This is all hearsay as I have not seen it yet but it is a possible concern. I've heard that the bulb sits too close to the plastic cover and that the heat generated can cause damage and even melting and this is why people go with the OEM litronic upgrade...

Take it how you wish...

I would stay away from any xenon conversions and get myself brighter bulbs and polish the lenses

How can I tell?

If I have Xenon or Litronic? I'm not really that familiar with the 2.

Litronic is the Porsche-specific name for a Xenon headlamp.

If you look at your headlights, the litronic looks like you have a piaa in the center of the headlight lens.

I bought some used litronic headlights on ebay from a Boxster that came off lease. Easy plug and play upgrade, though there is no leveling motor as you would find in an OEM package.

I did a cheap xenon upgrade similar to this one on my 996 -99.
Very happy with the result! Before, I had the best halogen bulbs money could buy - but my xenons are WAY better. The difference is really staggering. I hate non-xenon cars nowadays...

I don´t worry about melting or destroying any components since the xenon bulbs are 35W instead of stock 55W and produce LESS heat that the OE halogen bulbs.

I thought xenons draw more power requiring different wiring harness, am I wrong?

in response to other posts: from my knowledge, as someone else stated, xenons burn much cooler than halogen bulbs. they draw a large amount of power when they are first fire up, then after fired up use much less than a comparable halogen bulb. i have seen people do a similar conversion to stock 996/boxster headlights on renntech with pretty good results. whenever you drop a xenon kit into halogen housing, especially without a projector, you do not have a very good cutoff since the housing was made to project halogen light instead of xenon. this gives you a lose beam pattern and results in glare, which blinds oncoming drivers. with that said, from the pictures the 911/boxster stock headlights have a surprisingly good cutoff for stock halogen housing.

i upgraded to litronics and am very happy as the cutoff is perfect, they are self leveling, etc. although i got a good deal on them, they were still much more than drop in kits. search over at renntech as they have some good write ups on the issue.

Im still confused. Litronic...Xenon...Halogen...

I personally like the blueish tint off of some of the newer cars. Can I replace the bulbs on my Litronic headlights to give off a more blue hue? Is Litronic the same as Bi-Xenon? Any help or links?
