Cosmoline (sp) Ick!!!

I was wondering why my wheels were always gummy looking, greay and got dirty in 1 or 2 days.

I sprayed my wheels with bug and tar remover today out of sheer frustration, and lo and behold this gummy crap started coming off in big gooey chunks.
The wheels were covered with it!

My friend told me it was probably the factory protective cosmoline coating and was never removed - or at least not completely.

I had no idea my wheels were such a brilliant silver!! LOL
Took me about 30 mins per wheel to get them spotless.. nasty stuff!

To get your wheels to shine,

- Spray them with P21S wheel cleaner,
- Rinse them well
- Use 3M adhesive cleaner to clean any gummy stuff
- Wash them with mild soap
- Clay them
- Rinse and dry
- Apply Rejex
- Then use a quick detailer to maintain them weekly

I wouldn't use any bug & tar remover or any other wheel cleaner on OEM wheels.

Porschenut- Thanks for the writeup.
I agree, I would also not advise using harsh chemicals. It was all I had, and the brand I use is clearcoat-safe. I also followed up with a soap and water wash to remove cleaner residue.

will apply rejex tomrrow

The simplest and safest thing to do is use Zymol Strik. It's a lemon and grapefruit rind based cleaner that removes cosmoline, and embedded brake dust, safely and effectivly. You apply it with a foam pad and then let it sit for about 10-15 min. You can then wipe it off using a microfiber towel and water. Then apply the wax like Rejex.

After

Fantastic- So where's a good place to get the Zymol Strik? I've tried all of the usual auto parts chain stores and no one carries it.

How about this for regular cleaning, anyone used it?

http://www.scottsdalemotoring.com/pr...eelcleaner.htm
Description: The ZYMOL WHEEL CLEANER is an extremely effective and safe gel spray cleaner that clings to wheel surfaces longer than liquid products. A gel cleaner is more effective than a liquid cleaner in removing common road soil and brake dust with little hand rubbing.
Directions for Use:
1. Spray zymol Brite Wheel Cleaner evenly over your cool, dry wheel surfaces and let it stand for 2 - 3 minutes.
2. Brush gently with a zymol Wheel Brush.
3. Rinse thoroughly. Dry with a zymol Towel.
4. Spray zymol Wheel Coat evenly over your cool, dry wheel surfaces and let it stand for 5 - 6 minutes.
5. Buff gently to a sparkling shine with a zymol Towel.
6. Stand back and admire!
Note: Wheels must be less than 80°F. do not wash or rinse any wheel directly after vehicle operation. Wheels and rotors can be damaged by the sudden temperature change.
Ingredients: Contains Spun Tallow and Castile Soaps, Spearmint Oil Extract, Citric Turpine, Cetyl Cocomide (derived from coconut oil), Cocoamide, Guar Extract.

P21S gel is what Porsche packages in their little bottles and sell us. Go with it, one bottle will last you a while (2 years) it's not like regular wheel cleaner, two washes and it's done.

That's what I use and recommend. It's not aggressice enough to remove cosmoline and embedded brake dust. You need Strik for that. PM sent.
