A lot of people hate this kind of thread - I love it!
I had an '04 Z06 with the 'low' 405hp that I used to track for about a year and a half. Here's my .02 on the comparison:
On the track: The car was a match for the 996 GT3, so a 'regular' 996 wasn't much competition - if you assume equal drivers, both on R-compound tires, otherwise stock. My Z06 needed an external radiator and oil cooler in order to run for 30 minute sessions full-out. I also kept a good supply of brake rotors on hand, as I'd go through fronts in a weekend and rears every 3-4 weekends when running full race pads (Wilwood 'H'). All in all, the C5 Z06 is probably the best performance for the $$ out there. The C6 Z06, which I was able to drive on track for just a few laps (with a GM Engineer in the pass. seat) and only at 7/10ths on the runflat OEM tires, was REALLY impressive. It made my C5 Z06 seem slow.
Needless to say, I sold the Z06 because as good as it was for pure track driving, the street ride was rough, the cabin a little cramped, and the general quality of the car not up to $50k+ car standards. Interior was no better than a Cavalier. I couldn't get my wife to ride along in it - she really didn't like it at all.
My new-to-me 996 C4S seems pretty fast - haven't had on the track yet - but doesn't have the raw, race-car-like feel of the Z06. Much more roomy, comfortable, better steering, better 'road feel' in the 996.
The references to a Chainsaw vs. a scalpel come to mind. And the GT3's I've driven are like a laser scalpel - just an awesome driving car! If I had the dough, I'd have the GT3.
I've always wanted a 911, now I've got one - and I couldn't be happier!

i stay away from Z06, anything-AMG, anything-M and anything else that is trying to race me on the street. i even turned down a race with a honda a few weeks ago. i just told the guy his car is probably faster, mine is not very fast and that was the end of it. i am such a sarcastic SOB

I never knew that a fun drive with a friend could stir up so much! I really had know Idea about the z06. Its a fricking corvette, 80s macho car, built by GM. My chevy is a diesel truck and tows great, that is as much info as I need on Chevy performace. I am sure that there are evo's and wrx that could smoke my car as well but I wouldn't own one.
I will close this out by saying that the two cars side by side the P car smokes it just sitting there! I will take a Porsche any day over a chevy no matter what the price.

guys...the 996 is a bloody 8 year old car and you keep trying 2 compare it to a brand new car....just enjoy what you're driving or upgrade to new technology when you can/want to.
Mountain: glad you had some fun in the race, I made the same choice as you not too long ago. Can't replace a porsche in my mind...the whole package enjoyment is just too much fun
