I'm going with the MOMO I think it looks classy and in leather, I think mods need to be done with shifter though as it is universal. I tried to find the thread where someone put one in and it looked great, but No Joy.

How about this one by UUC. UUC is usually for bmw but I am pretty sure it can fit the 996. I use to have this **** on my m3 and it is by far the best **** I have used.

So what's involved with putting an aftermarket shifter in?
I am having some issues with my shifter now. The factory **** is loose. IE if you tug lightly, it will slide up and down. I found this out the hard way at an autox last weekend. The first time it happened I thought the shifter had come out in my hand
Is there a fix for this? Or.... I was thinking it might be kind of cool to just go with something aftermarket if it's not too much trouble.

just lift (pry) up between the rear center console and the leather cover of the shifter... youll see an allen screw holding the shifter **** on the shifter shaft... if not just lift up on the **** and the whole assembly will come off.

What did you put on there and how difficult was it?

The X97 option for the 997 is my fav. Suncoast says the **** will fit the shift linkage, but the boot will have to be swapped for the 996 OE. I can only find the **** & e-brake set and it is WAY too much for a cosmetic upgrade.

As another option, the regular 997 **** looks better than 996 imo. I'd like to find a used one and play around with making it fit to a factory finish look.

I think that It's difficult to improve your shift ****
Perhaps with CF OEM like Benjamin...
You can also fit a 997 CF in your car

There is a little shaving to take place but not a big deal if you ask me....
BTW: I do have a spare 997 **** sitting around so if you want to do something custom let me know... I also have the boot but it won't fit the 996 as you'll need to use the 996 boot to fit. Only the **** it self will fit from the 996 to the 997.

If those MOMO Sphere's are still like the one I had on my old car they are really easy to install. The bottom chrome part unscrews from the **** and there are three little allen screws that tighten against the shaft of the shifter. I made little indents in the shaft where the screws hit so the **** wouldn't move around or come off.

What do you guys do about the boot when fitting an aftermarket shifter to a 996? Are you cutting the factory boot down to accommodate the aftermarket one and how do you keep it from drooping? The factory shifter arm is pretty ugly and wouldn't look good exposed. It would seem that this is more challenging since the factory shifter is integrated into the boot and can't be separated.
I pulled mine apart yesterday. I'm surprised that the factory shifter sits on the shift linkage with no way to tighten it. It's just a friction fit where the plastic hole on the bottom of the shift **** slips over the shifter arm. We used a zip tie around the base of the shift **** (under the boot of course) to make it a little more snug.
I was looking at a nice Sparco **** yesterday. It has set screws to hold it in place. The problem, or at least it would seem, is that the porsche shifter is rectangular and the opening on the aftermarket ***** is round and fairly large. I can't see how that would be secure even if you could wedge the Porsche shift arm into the hole.
Now if somone had either a **** that had a rectagular opening or knew of some shims you could put in there, that may work. However, you're still in a pickle over the boot.

Boot answer:
Only the ugly stock one piece units are attached to the boot. If you have one like the OP it is actually 2 pieces. To use your old 1 pc. boot you cut it were it is loose from the handle around in a circle.
Then push the boot down through the bracket:
Insert the new shift handle down (keeping handle correctly orientated) into the hole left from last step.
Align the bottom of the handle (note that bottom of handle probably has a ring around it) to the boot cut at end of hole.
Use a thin tie wrap to fasten the boot to the handle ring.
Pull handle back up through hole bringing boot with it
You now have old boot attached to new handle with a nicely folded crease at joint.
