Since we're on the topic of exhausts, I'd like to know if there are any exhausts out there that will give a stock 996 more a F1, Bike, Ferrari, Carrera GT howl type sound. I have heard Tubi's, PSE, AP, Fabspeed etc. and they are more grumbly and don't sound smooth. I am looking for more trumpet sounding. Perhaps if I am after that type of sound, I should leave the stock sewing machine sound alone?

yeah, it is not going to happen. porsches, with the exception of the carrera gt, have more of a mid range sound, falling between bassy american rumble and high pitched italian whine. ap and pse seem the be the higher pitched exhausts i have heard for the 911, but that term is relative as it will never sound like a ferrari or lambo in full song.

you know, ferrari 355's are getting pretty cheap these days...

Ferrari F355 with Tubi! Now that's sweet! http://www.tubistyleusa.com/

I think Fabspeeds Bypass pypes sound aggressive and exotic at WOT.

agreed, i think the bypass pipes sound amazing but they are lower pitched than what he is looking for from his post. i believe the 355 is the best sounding ferrari engine ever, it and the carrera gt/pagani zonda have possibly the best exhaust notes out of any production car on the road today.

I've got APs on mine - only had them a month but love them so far - nice sporty sound - a bit "softer" perhaps than the standard exhausts but nicely louder - loud enough without being too loud for me.

It's all a matter of personal choice though - and I don't think the sound clips really help that much.

I got mine from Vivid Racing, and I've seen him say to someone that he would be willing to swap exhausts if they didn't work for the buyer. You may want to contact him.

+1 for the AP's - have had them on my car for about 350 miles now and they just keep sounding better with burn-in.

Was cruising home this evening with windows down and admiring the smooth tone. But yeah it is a mellow exhaust sound and not similar to Tubi or Fab.

works for me-

Hey Graham- Do you have any in-car vibration from the AP's at about 950 rpm? (cold idle)
That is the only thing I dislike. Wish I could bump my idle 50 or so RPM.

+1 for Dan at vivid as well- friendly guy, great service.

No vibration for me. Have you checked all the fittings are tight, and the nuts haven't "backed off" at all?

BTW - I ran mine for a few days without the tips on (the clamp was rusted on to the old exhaust) ... WOW! You get a REALLY loud sound inside the car, probably more like the car sounds like from immediately behind. Engine ran a bit hotter though, and it's not something I'd recommend except for a bit of sillyness....

yeah, nothing is physically loose- it is more of a very strong resonance at 950rpm that is magnified inside the cabin- makes things rattle.

once i go over or under 950rpm it is smooth as silk.

expect an ASSLOAD of thick white smoke for the first hour of driving while the exhaust packing burns off.
Great way to freak out folks on the local streets - it looks like you just lost your head gaskets or something..
Keep your windows rolled up and AC on 'recirculate' to keep that stank smoke smell out of the car.

You'll need to give it several hunderd miles to acheive the full sound, but you will notice a definite diff within 50 miles.

I have 350 miles on mine and the sound again changed- Much smoother, low midrange and trumpety.
