About the age of the battery I am not sure because I actually just bought the car about 3 weeks ago so I have no idea (Skibums old car). I was able to put the Optima Yellow top in last night and all I have to do now is make the bracket for the battery so it does not slide around. Here is the link to the bracket I will make, https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ght=Optima+DIY. I will take pics when I am done making it.

Just a thought. Bosch makes a replacement battery that is a perfect fit - including the breather hose - and is sold through Pep Boys. It runs about $115. If you can, it helps to briing the old battery along for sizing. It took the sales guy three attempts to bring out the correct one. Ten minutes later, I was back on the road.

Thanks- congrats on your new purchase! Kinda sucks you we're 'greeted' with an exploding battery, but hey I guess the two of you are just getting to know each other.

Did you ask Skibum what he did in that car that might have put the battery in such a volatile state??

so is there only one 'Yellow Top' or are there variants with different CCA ratings?

if boxsters take the same battery there is an autozone and costco battery that fits and is around the 50 dollar range

I'd make sure I knew what the actual cause was before just replacing the battery - a couple of things could be a dead short across the terminals in certain circumstances or a more or less air tight battery compartment for some reason - charging batteries give of hydrogen.

Although it probably was a battery fault, better safe than sorry...

Sorry to hear about your battery. I hope that you can get it cleaned up.

What is the best replacement battery? Optima Yellow Top?

Thanks.

Cool OMG.....Mind just did it too!

Guys.......this is a freaky story and I was afraid that I had fried my car!

But as it turned out, the stars were just aligned and it was a strange 1 in a million coincidence.

I just finished installing my new seats yesterday afternoon. I double checked all the wiring 3 times when I was done before inserting the key and starting the car.

Everything looked good.....I put the key in....and turned it......and BOOM!!!! I mean BIG BOOM.

Smoke is pouring out from under the hood....all electrics are dead.....I can't open the hood....and the car is in my drive under garage.

I'm freaking out!! Is it on fire? Is it going to burn the house down???

I'm thinking I have destroyed the complete electrical system in my car because of a pinched wire or mis connection.

Smoke finally stopped. I calmed down enough to remove the wheel and find the release cable.....looked under the hood and found this!

What are the odds that it just happened after I had installed my seats? But it was totally unrelated. My install was fine.

Got a new battery......old one was dated early 05. I had kept it on a battery tender which prob cooked down the water level. Everything is fine.

Check your battery!!

If you saw smoke! it was vaporized acid and it needs to be cleaned immediatley don't let it sit. I had one blow up once and the acid got everywhere. GL now I have a Opltima.

Cool

The plastic battery cover did a good job of containment.

I cleaned everything really well and then took a pitcher and mixed in baking soda and poured it over and into everything, cleaned it again and sprayed WD40 onto all metal and wiped it down.

I wanted to purchase the optima battery but thought that it would keep dying out if i kept the car in accessory mode. I ended up getting a giant Bosch one. I just wanna know from your experiences how long can you keep it in accessory mode on an optima battery?

I assume the Dell battery reference was to a laptop.
