I was going to buy oil and I saw the Mobile 1 5w40 in a 5 liter bottle. But on the container it states that this oil is for diesel trucks. Is there a difference between this and 5w40 oils for regular cars?

 

Yes there is a difference....get 0w-40 Mobil 1.....thats what Porsche and Mobil 1 suggest for Porsche 996s.....

I know Porsche has two types of oil weights recommeneded and 5W40 is one and the other is 0W40.

 

According to Mobil1 website, the one for Turbo Diesels has a special additive for diesel engines and the oil is for turbo diesels. It was designed to dela with the special needs of Turbo Diesels in extreme conditions...so why put it in a gas engine? If it was ok...then it would say for gas and diesel engines right? It was approved for DIESEL USE.....

 

Mobil 1 does not come in 5w40 synthetic for gas engines only 0w40 or 5w20 or 5w30....The 5w40 recommended oil is for Castrol Syntec.....

 

Interesting...Im not saying he should use it, Just wondering if it was a marketing scheme.

Mobil1 calls some oil's for high mileage engines but that doesnt mean it isn't good for certain engines with low miles.

I use 15w-50 anyways

 

15w-50? Ouch....although you are probably never cold enough to get to the 15w in Florida anyway......

15w50 is perfect for Florida. I dont care what Porsche says(to an extent)

For all the 50 weight nay sayers, Porsche recentrly added it to their approved list.

 

I'm running the 5W-40 for turbo deisel engines in my car. Runs just fine, engine even idles a little quieter. The oil is also rated for gasoline engines, read the back of the bottle. It qualifies under Porsche's specs in the manual.

I haven't had any issues with it and will probably continue to run it. I will change it every 5K miles.

 

Very cool! I didnt know that it was rated for gasoline engines. Now is that "for turbo diesel engine" part of marketing vs other 5w40 oils or is there actually something different about that oil?
